1st fill up and gas mileage...

Well I filled up my new 4runner for the first time yesterday. I filled it up when the light came on and put about 13 gallons in the tank. I calculated my mileage to be 15.2 MPG. That seems a bit low, I have seen other people say they get closer to 18 MPG around town.

Winter gas? I didn't know there was such a thing. Is that only in colder climates? I live In Southern California, so it never really gets freezing cold. Does the computer learn driving habits I think it might have been sitting at the dealer and only getting driven for a few miles on test drives, so I will give it a few tanks to adjust before I get worried.

Well after 2nd fill up mileage is up to 15.5 miles per gallon, I guess I'll keep driving and see if it goes up anymore. I drive mostly surface streets, so I don't expect it to be 20+ MPG but I have seen people post that they get over 18 MPG city. Oh well.

If it doesn't get any better is there anything I should check, like o2 sensor? The truck as 80k on it and i just bought it so I don't know the service history.

blah...I usually get between 12-13mpg in the city ~15mpg on the highway. I've never seen anything near 18mpg.
 
I'm getting anywhere between 220-250 on a full tank of gas and that is running all the way down to the gas light.

Does that seem about right, with a mix of city and stop and go traffic on the freeway.
 
thats about right for mixed driving, yes.

i get an avg of about 17 in the city, 20 highway.

when i baby foot it, i get 19 in the city, 23 on the highway....
 
My wife drives it most of the time and she is almost all city driving, maybe 25 miles out of a full tank. This last fill up we got 13 MPG. She told me she found her lead foot, and likes the v-6 more then her civic.

I guess we are doing okay mileage wise, I'll check tire pressure this week.

I'm anal, too, tracking MPG on a spreadsheet...

13.2 low, 19.1 high, average 15.5, mostly commuting, stop-n-go...

Interesting, tho... After I installed my TRD exhaust, I also disconnected the battery to install my PIAAs.. Mileage went up 1.5MPG, either from the exhaust, or the ECU reset...
 
Why is it when you fill up and drive about 15 miles and the gas gauge has already moved down to 3/4 of a tank. Is the top half smaller than the bottom?
 
Is there a link on how to test the gas gauge to see that it is working correctly. I mean i filles up on gas light before and the truck only took 14 gallons it seemed really small to me being as its a truck, i mean my accord has a larger tank.

no, that makes sense. our trucks dont put the light on when youre down to absolutely nothing.. it gives you the warning when you still have like 3 gallons left or so.

so you shouldve been able to fill a little over 14.
 
I'm going to test it again today or tomorrow I will have to fill up and I will take pics of the gas gauge as well as of the number of gallons.
