1st Gen 6 peice rear romavable half top

ok guys i was waiting for my paint to dry on 85 and i got my napkin drawing made a little more formal.
this is the project for April to be completed by June.
It will be made of light weight aluminum with silicon hybrid raised seals the latching is still in progress but im thinking a slide lock with hexagonal joints so you have to take it off from back to front which will allow for only one pad lock to keep people out. once the lock has been opened the sections will freely break off from the rear tailgate section forward. my hope is to have the entire thing fit into the rear storage area.

the lexan or plexiglass window will be a easy to replace item with a nice rivet in look and will be offered in many powder coated colors and clear coated polished.

it installs just like the hard fiberglass topper on the first gen 4runner
yes it will be a sectional for ease of use.

the reason i like this is becasue i hate having to take off that stupid fiberglass topper its so heavy and hard to find a corner of the garage it will fit in. so i plan on making two styles of these sectional toppers one that negates the rear seat and one that incorporates it i wanted get an idea of interest for this half top (pickup style) to see if anyone even was interested in it.
my light aluminum sectional topper will be able to store in the bed of of the truck so finding garage space isn't hard or even taking it along in case of rain.

So it's a tonneau cover, basically. I'm intrigued! Are you sold on aluminum, or have you considered fiberglass?

You know what, if you made the sections load bearing, and built it with raised rails on the side and some cargo tie-down points, I'd be very intrigued.

Yes it will be load bearing, mine will have porta shovel, highjack, axe and pick axe mounts on it to carry them all nice and neat. the rear section was going to be beefed up to hold slide out toolbox.

I have thought of ways to make a bikini top that seals 100% like the jeep bikini tops. I think this is a cool idea.

Just shy of 200lbs IIRC.

Build it! Take good measurements and post pics with the materials and specs you use for the top. However, I would suggest to get rid of the useless roll bar if you plan on doing this. It will make the fabrication a lot easier and you won't have to worry about making a seal between the top and the bar if you planned on keeping the bar installed.

the hole sectional idea is so that the roll bar does not have to be removed.

What if the 2 types would combine. Such that the panels that lay down across the rear to make it flat and pickup style are also the same panels that could be upright on the sides when you have rear seats. Then a waterproof soft top sectional is attached to the top to make the roof.

Or what about the actual hard top itself. If panels are cutout of it, in the tradition of the old Pontiac Trans-AM T-Tops. All the mounting points and hardwar remain on the truck, but you just pop out the cutout panels.
