Also, I know a tech that works at my local Toyota dealership. Before I read a bit more and found these instructions, I had asked him about programing it. He said he'd do it for me no problem, said he had to hook a laptop up to my truck and program the new key.
I was going to get together with him within the next few days of my key arriving.

Instead, read those instructions and tried it myself.
Worked the 1st time. Really hope this helps. I think the dealership will charge you as much as they can because they "think" you have to have this new key programed.

But I believe a "master key" just refers to a key that can currently start your truck...?

This is not correct. You can have up to five master keys programmed for your truck, and can program others with any of them, but the valet key is not a master and can not program other keys. That's one of the points to having a valet key.

Depends on your definition of screwed and how badly you want this new key. If you do go to the dealer to get a new master key, I'd suggest buying a couple of the cheaper stand alone keys off amazon/ebay/etc, and program yourself a couple new masters to throw in a drawer just in case.

I messaged the seller (Artiway) to see if the key will work with my 2004 which has the FCC ID: HYQ12BAN and he said he can special make one for me for the same price shipped. Just weary that he will sell it directly instead of through eBay.

Got my reprogram for 100.00 and cut my key

$25 and 10 minutes later, awesome!

I took my 2 in 1 to my Toyota dealer for cutting. They downloaded the info using my vin and charged me $25 bucks. I Programmed the key and remote myself using the instructions provided here in under 10 minutes. Thanks Guys, this was just great. My original remote broke and I had been using my key only for a while. :bravo:

Got the key in the mail. Just need to drop by Lowe's to get it cut. Programmed the all in one key (which turned out to be a POS) before so I know it's not difficult to do.

Does anyone know how to open it up to access the battery? Or what type of battery it uses?

Post # 74 is a good one. [MENTION=22393]Wallace[/MENTION] seems to have had it opened up. I have not had the need to open it. But I'm sure if you google how to open a "vw" flip key, there will be something. Should be pretty simple.

Mine is still going strong. No issues to report. Same battery it came with is what I am still using. Buttons all works still.
Happy with it so far.

Does the key lock open, requiring the button to close the fob?

Recently worked on a Mercedes Sprinter van, and the key doesn't lock open, it's held by the spring that forces it open when you press the button, surprising how annoying it was. If I went over a bump, the fob would fold while in the ignition.

Yes, the key stays locked in the "open" position until you press the silver button, enabling you to close it.
I can see how that would be annoying though...
