20" Enkei's split :(

I was driving down the road as usual taking a 90 degree left turn and a car coming from the other direction swerved wide to take the turn (this happens all the time right there) so I gave him a little extra room. The right two tires of my 4Runner slipped off the road (just the depth of the asphalt) I kicked up some dust behind me and didnt think anything of it...then it was obvious that I had a flat front tire...FROM THAT?!?! So I pull into my driveway (luckily I was right there) expecting a flat front tire...yep....BUT the rear tire was flat too! So I'm thinking these must be some cheap, soft tires or something (Fuzion)...so I get my stock rims/wheels to put back on and start taking off the right two rims. This is where my jaw hits the ground, BOTH rims are cracked in the center and the front rim has a chunk missing and part of the rim is pealed away!!! Are you kidding me? All this from just 10 inches of dirt on the side of the road?!?!?!

The only thing I can possibly come up with is that the thickness of the asphalt actually ruined both rims/tires. But its still hard to believe that the rims just split like that.

I can't tell from the pic, but how deep/sharp is the cutoff on the asphault? Is it possible that it when you went off the road, you hit it just right (or wrong) so that your tires were on the grass/gravel and your wheel was grinding directly onto the asphault? I don't have much experience with these sorts of things, but I've never seen anything like that..
 
there isnt much of a drop off...but that is what I'm guessing, that the rim somehow rode the edge of the asphalt

I've seen some pretty bad wrecks, including some directly into the rim area and I have never seen rims split like this.

Luckily neither of us (me and my bro) nor my Runner was hurt ;) just the rims and tires. A short while later I was up and going on the stock rims/tires.
 
Who did you buy them from? Hopefully you have a warranty?

I never really think of that. I bought the warranty on mine from Discount Tire, but now that I think about it, I am not sure whether or not it covers the rims.

In any case, it may not be worth using insurance, depending on your deductible. Good luck getting things sorted out.
 
would there be some road rash on the side that hits the asphalt? i mean if you could fine the chunk of the rim...
 
Thanks Cleric....I dont have any plans to claim insurance...but the place I bought them from wants me to send them back so the Toyota rep can inspect them...I dont expect to get anything/replacement, but its worth a shot.

I will also check with my county to see if the road itself is within regulations/standards because of the asphalt that has broken away right there. Who knows...maybe the county will do something. It must happen often because they occasionally show up to fill in that area with dirt.

I might go with 18" instead of 20"s in the future to give me a little more sidewall than the 20"s gave.
 
Well not to be mean or anything but I thought the Enkei's would be Made in Japan. But from the pics it says Made in Thailand, I guess they dont make it that strong like the JDM rims. Hopefully the city or the store you bought it from will give you a check or refunds on the rims. Damn I was also thinking of getting those rims because of the cost of it but I guess im going to have to stick w/ the 18x9.5 Volk Racing Gravels.:)

well i'm hoping i got a bad set and that not all the Enkei's will do this...the shop I bought them from has had the same rims on their toyotas for over 2 years with no problems

pics have been forwarded to a toyota rep and they are looking into it...like I said...I dont expect to get anything out of it, but it cant hurt :)
 
Wow! I always thought Enkei's were of pretty decent quality. You might expect this if you were to hit a curb straight-on, but not running off onto the shoulder of the road.
Hope you get some satisfaction.
 
I was thinking... for whatever reason that's not acceptable.

Like SUV is supposed to be wild and designed for rally... those rims should able to let you drive on that situation....

Hope this is just one of the 1000000000 cases.. :)

That's 20"... They are ONLY for road use, no sidewalks and definetly not for off-road :)

Sorry about you rims. Yes, it's a good idea to go with 18" or maybe stock 17" with nice off-road tires ;):

Good thing nobody was hurt. I pave roads/highways and have seen some wierd things. Never seen anything like this though. Think what may have happened as like stated above the inner side of the rim somehow rode the corner of the pavement causing the rim to collapse as it did.

Suprising the rim collapsed as it did. How fast you think you were going ?

maybe 25-30mph... it was about 50yds after i straightened up from a 90 degree left turn so i wasnt going fast at all
 
From the looks of it, the rim failed. I don't think the rim is capable of handling the load of the 4runner itself when the tire isn't present. The low profile tires doesn't help either as there's no buffer if you encounter those situations.

I'm not sure what they'll be able to do but they might throw some BS line of well you're not suppose to put these low profile tires blah blah blah. I still say try to get them to replace it no charge because anything is possible.

Check out the quality of the sidewall on those fusions. If they're too ridgid, maybe they were the cause of the rim failures. Anyways, complain to the manufacturer of both wheel and tire. I think you are owed an explaination.

Made in Thailand, eeks, what's the front of the rim look like?

Also, ever watch that show Unique whips on SPEED? Those guys were doing what ever it took to mount big tires on big wheels. Maybe the guy who mounted the tires damaged the wheels in the process...
