20 inch wheels on LIMITED

If you see both a red as well as a yellow dot on the tire, the red dot takes priority. An easy way to remember this is the phrase “Red Rules.” Ignore the yellow dot and match the red dot to the wheel low point dimple as some vehicle manufacturers do or, if no dimple is marked on the wheel, align the red dot with the valve stem.

I can't find the link right this minute, but I've read that Japanese manufacturers just place the tire stem on that spot rather than marking the rim with a dimple.

Either way, same principle applies: trying to match the tire and rim during mounting to remove any undesirable vibration or hop.

At this point, the tires are mounted a balanced just fine, so I'm not gonna deal with the hassle of having to go back and getting it redone. I'm loving the tires - great traction off road and low noise on road.:biggrin2:

since I saw Snow&surf thread on his new limited, he is the 2nd person here Ive seen put 275 tires on the 7inch wide rims. Just to let you all know, here all the tires on tireracks website that come in 275/55/20

I am posting this up because I would hate to see someone blow out there tires here and have a major accident by putting inappropriate tires on their 4R. If your insurance company ever found this out (and they will if you have an accident), you can bet they would give you a hard time about paying out a claim.

This is why i raised this question in the beginning. Get a different rim if you want wider tires to be safe! (i am swapping mine for the fj rims)

I know this is off topic, but why do dealers feel they need to brand this much!!! :uzi: A license plate frame is enough. This dealership had to put their name on an adhesive plate and tow hitch. You should charge them for advertising:banana:

It's a Tennesse/Kentucky thing. They did it to mine as well. So one of these days i'll remove the sticker from my back hatch.

I went 275/55/20 recomended by discount tire. They said that is fine and that 275/60/20 would be too large of a tire. No problems so far and not expecting any in the future.

just also wanted to point out, here is a little explanation of putting wider tires on narrow rims.

putting a 275 tire on a 7 inch rim will not look as wide as putting the same tire on a 8 or 9 inch wide rim.

Thanks for the pic's!! I'm sold on some 275/55's! They totally change the look of the truck. What Toyota was thinking when they put such a skinny tire on a big truck is beyond me... :shrug:

Those Nitto's look great - I had the same question about what the max size could be without rubbing and I bet no one knows because it is more of a trial and error issue. The following website helps show the various tires you can put on a 20" rim and shows their various dimensions (in inches) according to size.

20 inch wheels

Yesterday, April 21, 2010 I went to the local dealership and checked for myself. I had a spare wheel taken off, so I measured it and checked it.

The wheel is 7 inches wide, which is stamped ON THE BACK side, INSIDE one of the spokes of the wheel. A as comparison, my 2007 Sports Addition 4Runner is stamped at the same place as7.5”.

In conclusion, a tire wide 275 mm, particularly a low profile one such as 275x55 is not going to fit well on that wheel. This is a disappointment to me.

A bigger tire (275x60x20 or 275x65x20) will fit somewhat better on this wheel (ALTHOUGH manufacturers recommend a min wheel with of 7.5” and optimal of 8”) is also a problem, as it will have difficulty fitting in the wheel well WITHOUT modifications.

Also, is anyone using the General Grabbers that are recommended for 7" wide wheels? I am leaning towards those.

275/55/20 tires

I see some of you have installed 275/55/20 tires on the 2010 4Runner Limited, I feel the same as most of you, the stock 245/60/20 tires look ridiculous, I want to know if the larger 275's make the vehicle handle better, I find my 2010 to be a bit sloppy in the handling, my 2004 TFR was much better handling, what have you found the ride to be like after installing the 275's

I was thinking of installing the Nokian Vatiiva A/T, I had them on my 2004 TFR and they were excellent, but the 2010 is a different vehicle in many ways, so I am not sure of this is the right tire or not. I used to have the Revo's, but they were way to loud, and since I do 95% on road driving, with very little snow, Revo's may not be necessary

General Grabber HTS tires for 2010 4runner Limited

General Grabber HTS tires are the only tire I can find that will fit a 7" rim size in 275/55/20 tires, that really sucks, Toyota really screwed this one up with the skinny tires on the 2010 4Runner Limited, the only option is to use the General Grabbers, or "break the rules" and use any of the other tires that are recommended for a 7.5" rim size. Or alternatively buy wider rims, too bad the Toyota Tundra rims have a 5 bolt pattern instead of the 4Runners 6 bolt pattern, otherwise a person could use those if you could find them.

I am very disappointed with Toyota for doing this, I realize it was for better gas mileage, but if you use "green tires" that would compensate for wider tires (low rolling resistance). At lest the General Grabber HTS tires are low rolling resistance and approved for the 7" rim, I am going to go with these tires, I do not wnat any insurance issues later down the road by using non approved tires.

looks like these are good options vs buying whole new sets of rims. QUite surprised general is rated up there with the michelins.
i read somewhere here that GEneral and continental are made by same manufacturer...
