20" LE rims with oversized Tires; Any concerns??

G'day Gents,

I'm in the midst of grappling with a decision, made a few weeks ago, to "Upgrade" to a larger (275/55/R20) size tire.

I think I felt, like so many of you expressed about the O.E., 245/60/R20, causing your Limited to, "Under perform" at times and basically just not living up to what you'd expect from this, Highly refined 5'th generation Road Performer!!; these intended, low friction "fuel savers" just weren't cutting it wrt holding the road.

So I swapped-out the 245/60's, and installed a 275/55/R20. What a Major difference; I mean it feels like driving somebody else's truck...sits a lil' higher, handles with superiority around curves, and maintains extreme authoritative road manners at very high speeds on the Interstate!

But now, I learn that Toyota's 20" LE (12 spoke), stock rim, may turn out to be only 7 inches wide which prohibits the regulatory use of anything wider than (I believe...), 265mm's; may even be 245mm's, I'm not sure about that, but that's really a moot point.

My real concern emerges from the negligent use of 275 or 285mm tires, which all clearly state the minimum rim widths that are permissible!

Is anybody else the least bit concerned; I may be trippin' or overly preoccupied with this matter.

Hate to say this but....do a search. We had some decent threads on the subject a while ago - also the same in regards to 7.5" TE wheels. There was no firm YES or NO answer but there were enough smart informative posts which should help guide you to a decision. I ended up erring on the side of caution.
 
It's a personal choice. If you do a search you'll see everything from folks like me who have had no issues, to those that are certain you'll die a horrible death. I toyed with changing the rims, but I actually like the look of the stock rims (just don't know what Toyota was thinking when they went with such a narrow width and ridiculous tire). I put 275/55/20's on my limited right after I got it. They now have 46k miles on them and need to be replaced. All I can say is I had no negative issues (again, my personal experience) and I don't recall reading about anyone else experiencing anything bad. I'm about to order new tires today and hopefully will have the same good experience I did the first time. Good luck and do whatever you're comfortable with!
 
Wheel Size

It may also show on the door sticker. Here's mine showing 7 1/2 for my Trail.

I put the 275/55's on (discount tire told me to go that size) and absolutely LOVE them...totally transforms the look and feel of the runner.....hope it helps...

Is that a misprint for the Limited? I no longer have my wheels but I think they were 7 NOT 7.5"

Your reply was EXACTLY, what I was hoping for. I like the way the O.E LE rims look, and since I'm using chrome trim, I'm afraid of turning my slightly decorated limited, into an over-glorified, crowd gathering "Bait Car"!!!

The only real issue for me (being the gambling man that I am), is whether anyone else that we know of, has had any serious repercussions as a result of slightly pushing the envelope; I know that I've never seen or heard of a new tire unseating at the bead under normal driving conditions.

Wrong is wrong, but I'm feeling lucky!! Thanks to all who have taken the time to reply to this thread, including 1Engineer, who has explained that, the choice is up to the driver! .....Wait...this just in (See Below)!

Toyota Spec Sheet

Wheel Size 7.0 x 17 in. (SR5)
7.5 x 17 in. (Trail)
7.5 x 20 in. (Limited)
Wheel Type and Material Six-spoke 17-inch alloy (standard on SR5)
Unique off-road, 17-inch alloy (standard on Trail)
Unique dual six-spoke 20-inch alloy (standard on Limited)
Tire Size P265/70 R17
P245/60 R20
Tire Type Mud and snow radial
Spare Tire/Wheel Full size

According to this Toyota published spec sheet (Courtesy of BobsTrail), My previous post' entitled, "Toyota rim size numbers misleading??????", was accurate. A 7J on a 20 inch rim = 7.5 inches in width; I saw this spec sheet somewhere else, before I posted my other thread, but could not remember where, nor could I produce a source of proof, so I chose to take the seat of one having no evidence, but a fairy tail. The 20" rim is the only one in the family that utilizes this code system. Thanks Bob!

So what is it then? is it 7" or 7.5" for limited wheels? So many conflicting answers... If its confirmed 10000% to be a 7.5" wheels.. I am buying tires tomorrow..
 
Rim Width

Check the door sticker, here is mine from a 2013 Trail and it appears to match the spec sheet.

You ALWAYS, have the greatest Avatars BensonTT :cowboy:

Anyhow, You can most likely (10,000%), go get your new tires tomorrow, Just do yourself a favor. When you go to the tire / car care service center, tell the service mgr, to dis-mount the first tire from the rim (before removing all the wheels) and measure the rim width (between the two bead flange surfaces, at it's narrowest point) here--> )<-->( <--That's the rim's bead surface.

The deal is, If it's not 7.5 inches, than your not obligated to buy the tires; perhaps they can show you your rim size before bringing the truck inside the shop, but I would still have someone physically measure your rim.

And please let us know how you made out; either way, I'm still keeping my oversize tires on the O.E., LE rims. Good luck!

Mine too and we need somebody to check their 2013 Limited door sticker to see if they did indeed go up to a 7 1/2J or the specs were just a misprint.

Somebody showing the undisputed truth with pics or a video is the only way this controversy is going to end obviously.

Greg , I ran wide KM2 mudtires made for 8.5" minimum width rims on 8 inch wide ones,for 35k miles with no problems even aired down offroad. I called BFG on it and they said " off the record", as this is,that there is some fudge factor built in and to stay with 1/2" I should be fine .Something about lawyers and a previous major Firestone recall made them narrow their limits.
