20" Limited tire recommendations

Good evening, first post! I need a little help. I hate the OEM tires that came on this generation 4Runner, and I don't like my options on tirerack. Only 3 choices?? Am I missing something here? Looking for a tire brand with tire life longevity and a smooth quiet and safe ride for my family mostly on Florida roads and for florida type weather.

Any ideas? Don't really care to go down in rim size. Just want to take the old tires off and put the best ones back on the same rim without any customizations.

the problem with simply telling him to search is that it fills the forum with this non sense and when people do search all they get is threads like this, or the OP is scared off and never returns for his answer.

now i dont own a 5th gen but 275/55/20 is available in a lot of manufactures and should fit fine. assuming you want to go larger than stock size tire that is...
 
I have seen several on here go with 275 55 20 to open up more tire options. Here are some things to consider. By going to this size you are basically keeping the tire diameter the same so it won't throw off your speedometer much. The 275 55 20 will have more weight per tire and a larger footprint than the stock one so you will probably have slightly less mpg. The main issue is the limiteds narrow wheel of 7 inches and that most tire manufacturers recommend at least a 7.5 inch wheel for 275 55 20. The Continental CrossContact LX can accomodate the 7 inch wheel. I have no experience with this tire but the reviews on tirerack are very good. It should work well for your Florida seasons and it has a 70,000 mile warranty. The wider footprint alone will look much better than stock imo. Good luck.

you make a good point and it seems the 4Runner forum is way more conscious to this than most other truck forums. however its only .5" we are talking about here, i ran 315's on a 7" wide wheel for 4 years on my 2500HD with zero negative effects other than having to rotate tires like crazy.

of course this is technically dangerous so if you do run tires that wide and say lose the bead and crash…not my problem :lol:
 
The reason for limited options is Toyota made probably the only 20" wheel with 7" width. Most SUV wheels in general, not just 20's are 7.5" and up. So you will technically be going out of spec. Hence why the majority by new wheels to go with their new tire set up. Like myself...
 
Go with the 275/55x20 you will be fine!

As for it throwing off your speedo it won't, when I went to 275's it corrected my speedo which was slow by 2mph @ 60 with the OEM tire.
 
I put the Continental CrossContact LX20 275/55/20's on my LE -- they're recommended to fit a 7" wheel. I like them much more than the OEM poo-poos that Toyota put on - more sure footed ride, handling's slightly better and they look 8 billion times better on the truck.

I will be going with the Michelin LTX M/S2 in a 275/55/20 on the stock Limited wheel. I like the look of the wheels, so I'm not interested in replacing the wheels for a more uniform-sized wheel.

I have the Michelin LTX M/S2s on my Avalanche and love them - they are a great tire!

I am leaning towards maybe the General Grabber UHP's or HTS, or the Continentals Cross Contact LX's .... however, I called my local Toyota dealer and they are telling me that I should put 255 50 20's on. Anyone have experience with those? I was thinking of going with the Hankook Ventus AS RH07's. Thoughts?

Did your dealer give a reason why they recommended 255/50/20's? I'm assuming it might be mpg related, but know this -- I've been running my LX20 275/55/20's for well over 1,000 miles now and my mpg has not changed.

I'll never a run a tire any smaller than 275/55/20 on my T4R for as long as I own it.

The dealer recommending 255 50 20 is a poor choice imo. The tire sidewall would be .8 inches smaller, and the overall diameter would be 1.6 inches shorter. This size would look small and it would make your speedometer way off. When it says you are doing 60mph you are actually doing 57.1mph. I would go to 275 55 20 like others have stated.

I also have the Michelin LTX M/S2 on my 3rd gen and it is a great tire. I only recommended the Continental due to the narrow 7 inch wheel. Sure you could make the Michelin work (minimun wheel width recommended is 7.5), but I would hate to have a tire problem that caused a serious injury to my family or someone else and have some attorney's investigation cause a large lawsuit.

:iagree: One of my dislikes, were the narrow wheels/tires on the Limited. I ended up getting 20x9 wheels and wrapped them with 275x55s Goodyear Eagle LS2s, bigger footprint, looks better in my opinion, have put better than 15k miles haven't seen much change in speed or MPGs. :thumb3: I'm satisfied but will probably go with a different tire next time.
 
My mileage actually went up some how. I am at 17.9, I do a **** tin of highway. The 275/55/20 are almost an exact match to the anorexic Yokohoma's spec wise in relation to the odometer.
Love my tires, shockingly quite as the 300+ reviews state. Very aggressive tire and quite!
