2000 limited SleepyDad build

Always enjoy seeing the quality of your work and attention to detail. I actually used the same source for for lugs in my electrical upgrades to the positive side, so I'm familiar with those products. I've also switched to the TechFlex sleeving and Tesa tape!

With the tips on the Avalon terminal, I'm ready to tackle my negative side (so to speak). So 4 AWG for engine ground, 8 AWG for body/chassis ground - right?

OK, I ordered the terminals form Amazon (funny, they can be bought as a set). Now I'm ready to fab the cables.

Did you run the negative cable to the original connection point on the engine, or did you attach it somewhere closer to the battery? The original cable disappears into a harness bundle, and I'm not sure where it comes out. Pondering just running a new cable to a closer point on the engine.

Ok I feel like I'm doing a really bad job trying explain what I did so... here is quick vid to explain it.

maybe it clears up all the issues?

HDG holding up?

Hey Andy, how is the HDG holding up on your bumpers after a couple years? As wear resistant as hoped?

I'm looking at getting some bolt on sliders soon-ish and was toying with the idea of HDG them. Think it might be unique look and should be a durable coating, but if rock chips/road hits still cause rust spots I will just go with paint. Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

steering wheel recovering

Craft customs did a great job, I would use them again

steering wheel looks really good. I have bought three different covers for mine over the years and they last a year or so but they are the cheep ones from amazon. Good video.

hey sorry I did not see this. the bumpers pretty much look like they did when I got them done, except the HDG has lost it's shine. I have put some nasty scratches in them and it's been fine. nothing has rusted yet.

I had a HDG boat trailer for 20 years and it never rusted. I hauled it all over creation, up logging roads in Canada and beat the living daylights out of it. it's the main reason I did my bumpers. I would guess if you drive in the salt it would eventually rust. I never used my boat trailer once the lakes froze over so... I guess I have never salt tested the HDG finish.

Really the only downside I can see, it does not look shiny and pretty like a high quality auto paint. it's a great utility finish, I mean they don't powder coat the guard rails on the highway, they HDG them.

Your new vids popped on my sub'd youtube channels and can't wait to watch them  Sucks about killing the reman'd engine, but live and learn.

This is one of the few public offroad trail system in MN. Most of it is very easy, as you don't even really need 4WD to drive it. A rear locker would allow you to drive most of the trails. it's a nice destination with quite a few camp sites. it's kind of geared more for ATV and ATM use but some of the harder trails do have some challenges. This part of MN is mostly sand and gravel. there is some mud but most of the water has hard bottoms and is easily driven.

Some of the more challenging trails can get slick when it rains. if it's wet you will definitively need 4WD on these trails.

note: you will need a DNR ORV sticker from the DMV to be legal. Polaris also uses this site to test, so you might run into a large group of side by sides or ATV's from time to time.

How is the engine treating you so far?

It ran today from 9am to 6pm I did 350 miles of highway and maybe 20 of trails. It’s not burning oil, has great oil pressure, good power. I’m not going to complain about it. I’m getting 16 mpg, not great but it is what it is at this point.

I did add a compression test at the bottom of this post.

Would be interested in your thoughts on those compress numbers.

I’m watching for 5vz’s local and I’ll snag 1 or 2 extra engines when I can get a good deal on one.

Based on those numbers I would say it is a worn engine, but it has worn well.

With those oil pressure numbers, drive on and enjoy. :hungry:

I did not have to work today so I drove up and sloshed around in the soup. Going again this Sunday with a Range Rover guy. Welcome to come or meet up on Sunday.

I might take you up on that. I’ll be up north hunting and if it’s bad I’ll take the truck out. I was just there this past weekend lol.

Thanks for the input. I think I might look into this more and call some local galvanizers and see if they have any concerns. I want a durable finish and this would give a unique look.

I just watched the recent videos you published, it was hard to do knowing the outcome. Not much can be said other than we feel for you.

The DT Headers, they look beautiful but wow, a ton of work to get them installed. As you said, it looks nearly impossible to get those on with the motor still in truck. Thanks for the detailed video, I can now scratch those off the want list, too much headache or future headaches for me.

roof top tent loading and unloading

have been roof top tenting now for a couple of years. they have their pro's and con's just like everything else. my one complaint is mounting them and dismounting them by myself.

I milled a 3x3 piece of oak that fits into my engine hoist as to extend the reach and height a bit. this works great and I have used it a couple of times now. once I finish my anti-gravity gun I will use that but until that happens the hoist is where it's at.

Ok so I think the custom mounting bracket is key. I also spent some time trying to figure out how thick I should make it. there is some pretty substantial maths behind all that safety stuff but I found this little gem out there and needless to say, wow.

https://digitalcommons.cwu.edu/cgi/...om/&httpsredir=1&article=1008&context=cwu_met

so after reading up on that stuff, I love that kind of stuff.

I came up with a bracket like this... I decided to try it in 1/8" hardboard. hardboard is substantial enough so I could nail down the holes and clearance stuff without having to worry about the template bending.
<a href="https://imgur.com/qvWQV4A"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/qvWQV4Al.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>

so I was able to get it mounted with the mustang calipers and I think it's going to work out. Now I just need to make some 3/8" templates, ultimately after reading the safety stuff I'm going with 3/8 1020 steel. I will have to shim on the caliper mounts about 1/8" but that should be pretty easy. I could use some washers but... I'm not super fond of stacks of washers. I have done that kind of thing before and it's usually a pain in the butt if you ever have to take it apart. so my goal is no washers, but I'm sure I will have to shim just a bit to get the caliper centered correctly on the rotor.

image

Ok finished up the 3/8 A25 steel version of the caliper mounting bracket on both sides. works great. 9/64" centered the ford mustang GT caliper on the 4th gen rotor perfectly.

image

Now I just need to wire wheel them up and rattle can them, and of course figure out brake lines and eBrake cables.

image

I quick wire brushed and painted the brackets, also ground out some custom spacers instead of washers. the washer are 4mm thick and kind of round like a washer. I will heat them up and drop them in some oil to give them some protection.

I am finally getting around to making my adapter brackets. The bolt holes that align with the axle flange are easy. As you can see, I have two of the axle flange bolts and one of the caliper attachment bolts in the same line like you do. Would you care to share the dimensions for the caliper mounting hole placement?

I am also trying something that is new for me. I found that I could make the drawings for the parts in the free, open source drawing program called Inkscape (it's like Adobe Illustrator). I could draw the part to the dimensions I wanted and get those dimensions to print to paper with a pretty good amount of precision. Then I just cut what I need from paper and use spray adhesive to stick it on the metal. I check the work with a caliper as I'm going along, but so far the paper is a real help in doing the layout for the machining work that is involved, which amounts to drilling six holes, including one hole drilled with a holesaw to four inches in diameter.

By the way, I got a fantastic deal on the steel. I picked up about 4 square feet of the 3/8 eighths inch steel for four dollars at my wonderful local recycling center, where they recycle in industrial and agricultural equipment and machines. The place is a veritable goldmine for a guy like me.

I will tell you what, this truck does not get driven over the winter. I was planning on pulling one of the plates off and doing a google sketch up of it. That way I could get somebody to cut other mounts with a CNC for me. I have 2 3rd gens right now and would like them both to have discs so I need another set myself.

If you want I can pull both brackets and send you one. I would just ask you pay for the shipping?

Or you can give me a couple more weeks and I can share out the google sketch up file?

That is a very generous offer! However, I don't think you need to go to the trouble. I have my axle housing stripped and on stands. I am getting ready to paint and reassemble it. When I have it together I can mount the unfinished bracket on the axle flange and using one of my new rotors and a caliper, find the missing dimensions pretty easily. When you get your sketchup drawing completed, I hope I get a chance to use it to compare notes and see how close (or far apart) our results are.

One thing I notice with every new project I undertake is the vast universe of tools I could've used to make my work easier. Since you work with Sketchup I will leave you with some links about a 2 x 72 belt grinder that would be helpful in such endeavors. It is a project that can be built from plans that I think would be a lot of fun.

I’d buy a cnc’ed set off of you. Just throwing that out there
