2000 t4r radio in 1st gen?

I am about to upgrade to a navi head unit in the wifes 2000 4runner.
That means Ill have the factory radio from hers to put in my 1992 t4r.
Does anyone know if the wiring harness is the same or if the 2000 factory head unit will work in the 2nd gen?

i can't speak about the 2nd gen but i can tell you the radio/cd/tape player with amp from a 2k highlander edition 4runner can fit into an '88 4runner.

direct plug-in-play for me... no modding of wires or anything.

i'll try to add a pic later.

that looks like my exact radio from my 2000 4runner!

I know, not the best picture, it was taken to show my CB radio location for another thread, but again looks to be the same radio! If it fits in a 1st gen, Id bet the wiring harness is the same for a 2nd Gen, you shouldn't have any trouble

by the way Joel, that is a nice fit in a 1st Gen! looks great! I like the fact is has the tape AND CD, it almost looks stock, like it was just an expensive option for a 1988 4runner!! LOL

it's from my wife's 2000 4runner. i put an alpine with ipod control in her's a few years ago. i had just gotten my 88 and the stock single din am/fm radio didn't work. so, i removed the radio and pocket and put her radio in. i just had to include the factory amp.

that looks like my exact radio from my 2000 4runner!

I am having trouble with the install of a dual head unit from a 2000 4runner in my 88. I saw your post that you had to only "plug-n-play". I didn't have the same experience, probably because the PO had installed a Clarion CD player and spliced the original harness. From what I can tell, the original male radio harness was still intact, so I plugged the two male ends into the amp, and then the one amp plug into the back of the dual head unit. Is this how you did it as well? Any additional info would be helpful. It seems that most people upgrade to an aftermarket radio and not a OE replacemant, especially after they already have an aftermarket. I've searched all over the net for answers and am stumped. Thank you.

I also forgot to mention that I do get reverb through the speakers when I have the amp attched to the harness and the head unit attached to the amp. Might I have a bad amp? Should I try and pull an original harness from another 1st gen? Does anyone sell aftermarket OE replacements?

I believe you are correct... Two plugs from the factory wiring to the amp and then a single connection from the amp to the head unit.

Disregard the audio-in/ipod-in adapter. This adapter plugs into the cd changer port.

Do you know if the head unit and amp are good? Working correctly before you got it?

You might want to disassemble / remove the tape from your wiring bundle and check the connections. Also verify your ground is solid - the back wire.

The harness i bought from walmart said it was good for 4runners up to 2006 i believe.

Thanks for the fast reply Joel! I do not know for sure if the amp and head unit are/ were in working order. I bought them off ebay. The seller said that they worked, and had a solid feedback history. But who knows?
I ordered a OE replacement wiring harness from toyotapartscheap.com (part no. 86203-89101) and downloaded the wiring diagram from installdr.com. I'm gonna take another crack at it soon. I mounted the head unit in there to see how it fits, and I really like the way it looks. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!
