2001 4runner constant reoccurring cylinder 4 misfire

I've been trying to figure this out for month now. When I first drive the truck it starts and runs fine. Then the first stop light or period you idle for longer then a minute or 2 it starts misfiring loses power and the check engine light flashes. Sometimes it clears out and runs fine afterwards and sometimes it continues to run like crap. Then next time driving it it's fine until stopping again. Some days it won't do it at all and some days it does it from start up. Which is what is puzzling me to death. Once it starts to happen if you shut it off and turn it on again the misfire seems worse. Am I looking at an injector problem? Cam or crank sensor? I'm gonna replace the plugs and wires but from what I've read that never seems to be the problem with misfires.

I just had a similar experience with my 99. I did the coil swap and new plug wires. Finally I bought 6 injectors from a wrecking yard and installed the best one in cylinder #4. All was fine after that. I sent the other 5, plus the original in cylinder 4 to Witch Hunter. As it turned out, the injector from cyl 4 had a bad coil winding. I would look at injectors. It is more common than you would think. Good luck!

This is very possible, and should be looked into. However, misfires most certainly CAN be caused by bad wires. I had a very similar misfire problem, which turned out to be a cracked spark plug wire, which ruined the connected coil pack. I replaced all the wires, and the one bad coil pack, and it was back in action. I would strongly suggest replacing the wires, then if it's a no go, replace the coil pack corresponding with your misfiring cylinder. If it still doesn't clear it up, replace the injectors as suggested by T4Rscott.

Bad Injectors is Good Possibility

I'm very much agreed with T4Rscott. However, depend when is the last time you replace the plug wire, coil or spark plug, it might be the easiest thing to look into first. My '96 4runner has the same symptom #1 cylinder misfire and turn out to be a bad injector. Once I replaced the injector (new) $200. The problem is gone.

Again, depend on the mileage of your vehicle, I send out all 6 of my injectors from my '98 4runner to RC Engineering, in Southern for cleaning.
The measure the before and after, 3 of them dripping and 3 is fine. After cleaning, the truck ran much smoother and better power.

Have you taken a diagnostic reading? even if the cel is not currently on, there maybe a code.

Thanks for the replies. I will start with the plug wires and go from there. It reads the cylinder 4 misfire on the code reader. Sometimes random cylinder misfire. Next time i drive it I'll get the exact codes. It's not daily driven currently. When we started having these problems we got an 07 V8 4runner :lookout:

I know everyone preaches oem oem oem. Is there anything wrong with getting injectors from rockauto?
