2001 4runner Suspension Help

Brand new here. I've been lurking and have completed several upgrades based off recommendation on here.

I've got a 2001 4runner that I believe needs new suspension. Seems way to disconnected and bouncy both front and rear. It's got 178,000 miles and I've had it for the last 78,000 miles. Pretty sure the suspension is stock and the original stuff.

I'm not really interested in a lift unless its a simple by product of putting on new suspension. I'm handy in the garage with most repairs but have never done any suspension components.

The big question......can I just replace the old suspension with new OEM or equivalent parts without getting a 3" lift? What parts would I need to look into? Any OEM kits that have everything included? I get most of my stuff from RockAuto but I'm not what exactly I should replace and whether it's something that I can tackle on my own. Doesn't seem too complicated.

Any advice or help is greatly appreciated!

Just go to the dealer and get new shocks for your year model. They will look it up. Your springs should be fine as long as you haven't noticed any sag.

I bought Monroe quick struts off rock auto for my 99. They come totally assembled so it's easy to put them on. I have noticed no sag and they didn't lift the front. I put Kyb shocks on the rear and left the stock springs. Car rides great now and it was about $200 all told.

I always recommend Bilstein to anyone who is replacing their stock shocks. You'll have a slightly firmer ride, but in my opinion it is the best, longest lasting option; heck, my friend swapped out his Bilstein shocks on his Tacoma at 160K miles and he could have gone a bit longer on them if he needed to. For the 4Runner, look into Bilstein 4600 or 5100 shocks. You can get them from Wheeler's Offroad here, and you may be able to find them elsewhere, as well (I always like to check Amazon).

Another good option is KYB MonoMax, which will ride like stock (these are actually what my friend with the Tacoma replaced his stock shocks with). They are cheaper than Bilstein, and are still of very good quality in my experience; they are monotube shocks, after all, as are the Bilsteins. You can find those on Amazon; just input your truck's specifications, and you can find the exact ones you need.

If you want the stock Toyota Tokico shocks, you might find yourself paying as much for them as you would for upgraded Bisteins. I replaced my shocks about 4 years ago with OEM ones straight from the dealer, and I think the price was in the $400 range.

I will say this: I do not recommend Monroe at all. My dad put some on his T-100 that he used to own, and after about 15K miles, they were toast. Of course, they were cheap, but cheap doesn't mean quality.
