2001 Master Cylinder Removal/Replacement Questions

Hi, New guy here. Great site with a ton of info. My 2001 4Runner is leaking brake fluid by the pedal so I'm assuming the seal is bad on the back of the unit as it is collecting on my floor mat.
Does anyone have a write-up on how to safely remove the MC? I plan on buying a new (I know, super expensive) or from a junk yard.

its a manual transmission i assume.

if you are talking about the brake MC, if it leaked, it would be under the hood. it cant get inside the cabin. the mc bolts to a booster, and the booster bolts to the firewall.

if you have a leak in by the pedals, it would be coming from the clutch MC.

Its an auto. It must be running from the brake M/C and coming in where the brake pedal meets the booster....any ideas?

does it have a vacuum booster?
if so, i dont see any way for the fluid to get inside the cabin.

No vacuum booster, its a weird set-up for 01 and 02.

The 2001-2002 models have traction control and therefore the ABS actuator and booster are built-in with the MC .. pretty expensive to replace. maybe you only need to replace the brake master cylinder kit. in that case, try the dealer.

on the second page of the diagram in the link, the part number for the master cylinder kit is given.

however, if it's the MC, try rock auto or autozone. you might be able to buy a remanufactured MC there.

Thanks for that. I found a used MC from Advance, supposed to be here Friday, but I'll keep that kit in mind. Anyone know how this damn MC comes off the car? Don't want all that compressed nitrogen blowing up in my face!

after disconnecting the batteries and disconnecting the brake lines, you need to undo the 4 nuts (shown in far right in the toyodiy diagram) from under the dashboard. I beleive you can see them above the steering wheel at the firewall interface. You might also need a new gasket (shown in the far right of the toyodiy diagram marked as 44785C).
