2003 4runner Sport Alarm

You have that backwards, I believe, 4runners are and were a level of vehicle that all 2003 and up had a simple alarm system with key fobs to lock/unlock doors. The engine immobilizer was an extra. I believe standard on the LTD, not sure about the Sport. I have a sport, and have the immobilizer package.
Yes, I have the engine immobilizer light that flashes when you remove the keys. I'm just trying to figure out if it has the alarm system that goes off when someone opens the doors after it's been locked with the remote. I tried putting the windows down, locking the vehicle with the remote, waiting 30 seconds and then opening the door from inside however no alarm went off. I'd like help on figuring out if it has that Alarm and if it may have been disabled. If so..how do I reset it?
OHHH. Ok. Gotcha. Lifting the door handle won't set the car off. If it did, can you imagine HOW irritating that would be.
It will go off if the door IS OPENED without disarming the system. So if they bust a window and open the door, the door position sensor will set the alarm off.
I know some irritating after market alarms, the kind that are too sensitive, can do that if the car is set up in that manner.
From my experience, no, the alarm system WILL NOT go off by simply attempting to open the door while armed. People make mistakes, not paying attention and go to the wrong car..
You tried opening it from inside, huh, never done that. Possibly is knew? Window down? No idea. Does it BLINK BLINK and give you a beep when you lock it with the key fob?

Yes, it blinks when I lock it up. The manual mentioned locking all the doors with the remote with the windows down, then waiting 30 seconds to reach inside and open the door with the handle to test the alarm. I have read that these alarms can be disabled through a process of using the key and pushing the remote buttons while the key is in the ignition...I'm trying to figure out the method of resetting the alarm to work if that's why it doesn't go off because someone disabled it. I've found methods about how to program the alarm with older 4runners but nothing on this year. Also if these 4runners have an alarm...is there any led light I should look for to show that it's armed besides the small red flashing key light that shows the engine immobilizer is on?

The engine immobilizer system is standard equipment I believe, and so is the keyless entry system (with panic button, often confused for an actual alarm system).
Alarm systems were an add-on. Chances are that if you do have an alarm, there will be another LED somewhere on the dash indicating the system's status.
Edit: The alarm system was standard on the Limited, but optional on the SR5 and Sport. And based on the thread posted by ryanbt below, there may not be another LED aside from the small red flashing key light that shows the engine immobilizer is on.

sonerick is right. The LTD models were the only models to come with an alarm. I purchased the factory one at ToyotaPartSales.com and installed it in about 30 minutes. It plugs right into factory wiring harness under the passenger dash and utilizes the existing keyless entry system. The easiest way to tell if previous owners added the alarm is to lock the door with the fob and look at the engine immobilizer LED next to the clock. If it stays on solid for the first 30 seconds and then blinks, you have the alarm. If it blinks right away you only have keyless entry. See this thread:
