2004 Engine Pull Question

I am pulling the engine in my 2004 Limited 4X4 V6 (blown head gasket) and am following the 2004 Factory Service Manual. The FSM seems to show how to PULL the transmission which I DO NOT want to do. Can someone help me with the exact procedure I need?

From reading in the forums and the FSM, I am thinking I do not need to drain the transmission fluid. I need to remove the starter, unbolt the flywheel through the starter hole (is this even possible?) support the transmission, and then unbolt the transmission tunnel from the engine. I am pulling the wiring harness with the engine per the FSM so I will need to disconnect the harness from the transmission also.

I just want to make sure I am not missing something or not missing an easier way. I want to pull the engine because it seems to be easier when changing head gaskets and the previous owner ran it very hot so it may have cracked the block anyway.

Thanks for any advice.

check the tranny fluid lines that are both attached to the radiator and to the block. they are hard lines until the passenger side of the radiator where they turn into rubber lines. make sure that when you pull the motor they are disconnected or else you're gonna have to replace some things

No, you don't unbolt the flywheel, not unless something is drastically different in these newfangled motors of yours. Support the transmission with a floor jack and/or a ratchet strap looped through the frame rails, then pull the starter and unbolt the bell housing from the back of the motor. Once you've got everything else on the motor removed and it's ready to come out, suspend it from your engine hoist and pull it forward and it'll slip off the splined input shaft and be free of the transmission.

Do you have to pull the motor just to replace the head gaskets?

You don't unbolt flywheel, what they meant is the bolts that's connected to the torque converter.

OK, thanks everyone for the help. Seems I was misreading the FSM. This should make it much easier. I was really wondering how the hell I was going to do it :-)

I already have the radiator out, so anything connected to it should be done. Will make sure. Thanks for help!

You basically have to disassemble the front and bottom of the engine to get the head off so most have found it easier to just go ahead with the few bolts remaining and take the engine all the way out. Thanks for your help above.
