2004 keys

I have a new 2004 SR5 4Runner. I could not find any information on 2004 keys. Two Ebay dealers said that if the key looks the same it should work.

I purchased two keys on Ebay for a 2003 4Runner that say howard on one side and toy43-hk on the other. They came with an instruction sheet that gave the gas and brake peddle sequence for 1998+ and an Ignition and door opening sequence for 2002+.

I can not get the keys to program with either sequence. Is this key compatable? Am I using the correct programming? The key looks exactly like the factory key.

I believe the 4th generation requires the dealer to program the key into the computer using a special computer of their own. You must have a master key to program another key, if memory serves.

Check to see if there is a TSB that covers it. Go to this thread to see where to get them.

Unfortunately, I'm out of the country so I don't have access to the owners manual and TSB's.

To Program An Additional Key:

1) Place an already programmed Master key (one that works all locks) in the ignition, but DO NOT turn on.
2) Press the GAS pedal five (5) times.
3) Press the BRAKE pedal six (6) times.
4) Remove the key from the ignition.
5) Insert the new key, but DO NOT turn it on.
6) Press the GAS pedal one (1) time only and wait about a minute for the security light to quit flashing.
7) Remove the key and Press the BRAKE pedal one (1) time only.
8) Wait at least ten (10) seconds, then re-insert the new key and start the car.

You can have a maximum of ten (10) transponder keys programmed into your car

mind you, you have to have a original chipped master key before you can program any new keys to your system, then you can do the above steps to add it in.

I have tried that with no results. Do you know for sure that it works on a 2004?

Yes, I read this post and did not believe it then or now. Perhaps this was possible on some earlier generations of 4Runners but, as JHarris2 said, with 4 Gen keys I believe it is necessary to have the keys programmed by a special device.

The 2004 service manuals show a procedure that REQUIRES the OEM scan tool (handheld tester). So it's either a few grand on the tool or a trip to the shop. Of course, it's entirely possible that there is another (undocumented) procedure that DOES NOT involve the scan tool.

Thanks for everyones reply. I guess I will have to bite the bullet and go to my dealer. By the way, The first thing I did was search but found no references to 2004 models.
