2004 vs 2005 4 runner v8 HP

Hi Everyone,

I have enjoyed reading your comments over the last few months. Bought a 04 SR5 V8 4runner back in August (traded in my 1993 4runner with 200k miles). Great vehicle, of course.

I may not be alone here... I am a bit dismayed that my 04 v8 is APPARENTLY underpowered compared to the new 05 v8.

However, I have noticed that the newer (05) rated 270 HP is at 5400 rpm and the older (04) rating of 238 HP was at 4800 rpm--not much difference in torque.

I am surprised that I have found no comment about this in more detail.

Asside from the 05 vvt-i implementation, how much "real" difference is there in their respective HP? Have there been any changes to the SR5 V8 transmission from 04 to 05 as well?

Would enjoy any feedback...

Thanks!

Anything you buy is always bound to be improved on. You could make your comparisons to your 93 and all's cool. Compared to my 3.4 V6 3rd GEN, I have NO complaints. It's all good. :D

Agreed! Much more power than my 93 3.0L v6. Nevertheless, I suspect that some of the "power" difference between the 04 and 05 v8 models is simply creative marketing. Certainly, there are some design diffrences though. I am VERY happy with my 04!

My 93 4r 3.0L, argueably one of the more problematic 4runner engines, still provided me with 200,000 miles and was still going when I traded it in.

No doubt the 04 will keep me content. Yet, a supercharger of some sort...

A recent posting reminded me of this "old" thread. Has anyone seen dyno results from the V8 05, and how they compare with the 03 and 04?

I'm still very curious:cool:

Companies love change. I remember when in 2001 I got a 4Runner with VSC and 2000 owners were upset.

My opinion, I wouldn't be too upset about this. I think Toyota did this to keep up with the Jones or if you prefer "Nissan". Of course you won't feel more power until the variable valve kicks in and the question is at what RPM does it do it's thing. I feel you won't feel the exta horsepower 90% of the time. The next concern, is did they get rid of the bugs, or maybe better put, should you buy the newer engine in the first year. And of course in 2006 there be a few more changes, then you will want the new model all over again.

Okay, I get your point, but I'm an anal-retentive scientist, very skeptical, borderline engineer (engineers please take that as a compliment). I'm curious about actual perforfance differences. Not "claimed" differences.

Thanks:hello:

I've driven both, lots, and here's the short and sweet.

Basically, the 05 V8 feels exactly like what it is; a little more torque (power) throughout the powerband, and 40 more hp on top. I loved the V8 in my 03, and it was definetly not lacking in jam. That said, it did run short on breath in the higher rev range.
Starting from a standstill and punching it, the torque in the lower/mid range revs was nice, but it would taper off slightly as the redline approached.

The new V8 simply solves that problem, no more, no less. The power is more linear, and builds more progressively as the revs go up (from my driving impressions, of course). Some were worried that this would result in some loss on the low end, but thankfully that was not the case......the beauty of variable valve timing ;) Too me, it also feels a little torqueir in the low/mid range as well......bonus :D

As for normal "around town" type driving, the average joe may not notice much difference. The exhaust note is slightly different, the gas pedal feels a little different, but VERY SMALL details. Passing power on the highway is improved, as you get a chance to let the revs wind up more....this is were I notice the power the most. Basically, there is no downside to the new VVTi V8's, however, if someone were, say, getting a smokin deal on an 04 V8, it may not be worth the extra $ if you don't need/want the power.

As for concerns with buying the engine in its first year, that wouldn't even cross my mind. a) It's a Toyota b) Lexus has been building great VVTi V8's for years, so it's nothing too new.

Thanks a lot, everyting you said is what I was looking for. But I still want to see the "black and white" dyno results.

I would expect the '05 V8 to pull harder on the top end (upper RPM range) with the variable valve timing.

Down low, the difference will not be as noticeable.

This is just based upon my past experiences with vehicles that have variable valve timing, not any real-world driving experiences.

How about the new Pathfinder V6

I read it makes 270 HP. Same as the new V V T i V8 Toyota motor. On a V6. I think it is mostly Toyota marketing. The extra HP is all near the top end, and there are so few people who actually beat their vehicles in that rpm range.

I would only look closely at the torque rating and where that power was made. If most of it is in the 2000-3500 rpm vicinity, that's where typical acceleration is done.

Can't we get 2 people on this board who live in the same place, one with an 04 V8 and one with an 05 V8 to do a little on road comparison?

I live in Ottawa, Canada with an 05 V8 and if someone on this board lived here and had an 04 I would be up for it.

Cheers,

.

I don't think most people have any reservations about running their engine near redline for hard acceleration. After all, these vehicles are automatic transmissions and they will run up towards the redline if you plant your right foot to the floor.

Do you really consider that "beating" your vehicle? I sure don't....

Heck no! If anything, I think it keeps it healthier to do that semi-often.....

Cheers,

You can bring your T4R west a couple provinces. I'll be waiting. :D

Mark86 already gave us a break down, and I think he's trying to talk his parents into an impromptu drag race. He owns a 2003 V8, and his parents have the new 2005 V8.

iForce,

How about this. We pick a time, both start racing towards a middle point. (I would think it would be around Kenora)

Who ever gets there first wins:D

Cheers,
