2005 4 runner turbo diesel!

The 4 banger turbo diesel been around for a while now. I think 131 hp for a turbo diesel is pretty weak for something that heavy.

I would actually be willing to go into debt for a NEW car if we could get it. I am currently spending $140 a week in gasoline for my gen3. It is sad to think that my 7000 lbs 1ton Dodge with auto trans gets better fuel economy than my 4cyl 5spd 4Runner.

I saw one owner with a diesel so far, but I think that he is in the Dominican Republic. As far as the horsepower I owned a 1995 Isuzu NPR with a GVW of 14250 lbs. That truck weighed 7800 lbs empty and the 135hp 4cyl turbodeisel did very well in town but struggled on the freeway. Anyway, does anyone know if the diesel Gen 4 has a manual trans or are we stuck with just the auto trans?

Due to your environmental requirements, you would get the 1KD-FTV engine (16valve DOHC), which has 168 hp and 260 ft-lb.

Our third world governments don't even require catalytic converters, so we can pollute all we want. That's why Toyota sends us cheaper, simpler, older-generation engines.

Is the fuel mileage any different for the diesel?

Yes, that's the Diesel's main advantage: it gives you more miles per gallon of fuel.

Besides, since Diesel fuel is a less refined petroleum derivate than gasoline, it's about 25% cheaper everywhere except in the U.S.

Let me ask that in another way...

What is the MPG?

29 mpg highway / 21mpg city (downtown)

I am getting 20-21 with my V8 on the highway. I don't think it is cost effective to look forward to a diesel in the near future for me.

It would take too long to get back any fiscal advantage.

In my country, diesel sells for $2.70, gasoline $3.75.

A 20-gallon tank of diesel ($54) gives me a 420 mile range. (21mpg city)

A 20-gallon tank of gas ($75) would give me 260 miles. (13 mpg city)*

*A friend of mine has a brand new 2005 gasoline V6 T4R, and in our crowded slow traffic cities he just gets 13 mpg. (20 kilometers per gallon)

If I run 10,000 miles per year, I would spend:

$2,884 on gasoline per year
$1,285 on diesel per year (Around 50% savings)

On a 5-year period I would save $7,995

Is the mpg above for the "third world" version or the diesel that Toyota would put in a truck in North America? It sounds very underpowered btw. I thought I heard somewhere that they were planning to release a diesel Tundra - or was that wishful thinking?

The version that would be used in the US has around the same mpg, but it gives you 168 horsepower and 253 ft-lb.

It's still a 3.0 Turbodiesel, but with DOHC 16 valve, variable valve time timing and common-rail computer controlled direct injection.
