I'm actually glad now that I got my V8 SE last month instead of waiting for the 05's. I could have saved some more if I waited until August but not sure if I could have gotten my 4runner in the config I wanted.

Well, I said I'd eat my words if the 4runner got the new v8 and I'll do just that. I'm thrilled I now have a 4runner to look forward to in a couple of years. I was initially very upset I didn't wait, considering I've only had my runner a month, but I just saw that the v8 won't be out until January. There is nooo waaay I could have waited that long. I like the silver accents btw...even though you can't tell on my silver runner. I like the contrast on other colors.

I've seen it mentioned that the new 4Runner 2WD models were supposed to have some sort of auto-locking LSD to take the place of just standard traction control. Is this still the case, or am I remembering thing wrong?
BTW, I've had my '05 on order for a month or two now and was told I would get it in December... so maybe January is what they're saying just so that people will be pleasantly surprised if it comes out a month earlier, or maybe I'll just get mine a little earlier than somebody who isn't already on a waiting list?

The Toyota web site says:
"Auto limited-slip differential (2WD models)"
I don't know what they mean by "Auto" but I don't expect that it has anything to do with locking and would expect that it still has the TRAC system for the rear wheels.

I cant say for certin, but you should not be able to tell what diff is installed without cracking the case, unless its a electric/ARB/OX type, for a Limited slip the only way you can tell for sure is to look inside the diff itself

Perhaps true. I just took a look at the Tundra that I was talking about and from the rear the diff looks pretty much just like an open diff. The reason I think it is an LSD is that it has a sticker on it that says "Only LSD Oil". Also the Toyota web site shows that the 2005 2WD Tundra Sport package has an LSD:

None of those three factors should be changing for this new motor as none of them are really related to the addition of VVT-i.
So my guess is that it will remain the same as it is for the current i-Force. And I have not yet owned an i-Force so I don't know what the current requirements are. It seems that if I recall the current i-Force recommends premium but does not require it.

I see you have an '05 on order - any word on the expected delivery date? I think I'll really regret not waiting for the new V8 (by buying an '04) - however, the 4 month wait (assuming Jan per the Toyota website) puts a kink in my holiday plans (which had assumed I would have the 4R by Christmas! DOH!!)

I'm guessing that this is due to the addition of a 5-speed auto in place of the 4-speed on the V6 models?
It makes sense because the V8 models don't seem to have increased much if any that I can tell...
Toyota might have raised the price a bit on the 2WD models all across the line with the addition of their computer controlled LSD. On most cars where LSD is optional, it's about a 250-400 dollar option... and the 4Runner LSD is even more advanced.
They tell us to expect our car to be delivered in mid-late December. I guess we'll get it in a little before you can buy them off the dealer lots since we are on a 'waiting list' of sorts.DT04R said:
