• How much? Nissan hasn't said yet. The current version ranges from about $19,000 to $30,000.
• What's the drivetrain? 4-liter V-6 rated 265 horsepower at 5,600 rpm, 284 pounds-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm; six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. The 4x4 system is for part-time use and has no automatic or full-time mode.
• What's the safety gear? Normal bags and belts, anti-lock brakes. Optional: side-impact and head-curtain bags.

I have been an xterra owner since I bought my 2002 4wd. Just to let you know its been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. All you have to do is change the oil now and then, a new battery/tires every 4 years, brakes lets see Ive changed the front pads once and now that I think about it, it probablly did not need it. I have 199,800 miles on it and it has never failed me on or off the road. Sure it does not have a cushy interior like some other trucks but its perfectly fit for what it does, and extremely fit for off road.
I am a Land Surveyor and takes it everywhere. I find it very comfortable on the road and it turns around on a dime. Has plenty of cargo space for its size and the back theatre seats are a pleasure to passengers.
But the gas miliage could be better even though its pretty much on par with competitors.
That being said, I am ready for a new vehicle and that is why I am here.
I am looking at a 4runner only because I am looking for a bigger, off road capable vehicle. I am ready for some more cargo space and a bit more room.
10k more than a xterra, I am wondering if it is worth it?
Are they as reliable as my xterra?
Am I going to be disapointed off-road?

As of 2010 the 4runner is in its 5th generation. If you go to the main page and click the 5th gen section, that's where you'll find the discussion about it.
Many will say the price is worth it due to the reliability, but you may be hard to convince based on how the xterra has performed for you. As for off-road, the Trail edition has a rear locker. All have very fine tuned brake traction control that comes pretty close to one.

We owned a 2006 Xterra S and then a 2008 Xterra SE before switching to the 2012 4Runner SR5 last year. The Xterra was a great vehicle for the most part. The 4R is a lot roomier though and has better fit and finish than the Xterra. Also, I don't know if you had this problem but the Xterra had a litany of rattle problems and the air conditioning seemed to have a mildew smell most of the time. We were told it was due to the design and they just kept spraying something into it every time we got the oil changed. I also did not like that you could not get a moonroof in the Xterra. The engines are roughly similar, but I will tell you the Xterra seems to have better gearing and throttle response... not that it matters to most people but it is different. The suspension is a lot mushier in the 4R too if you get the SR5 model.
I am completely pleased with the 4R though. It's one of the few auto purchases I've not regretted and it still brings a smile to my face every time I drive it or see it in the garage/parking lot. The fact that it has great reliability and even better resale is icing on the cake. If you can justify the difference in price, I don't think you will regret the change.

Agree. Our 2001 XTerra only got 17mpg mix City/Hwy. (It was only a 2WD and got totaled so I replaced with first-gen 4Runner that gets me 21mpg mixed city/hwy.)
I am looking at a 4runner only because I am looking for a biggeroff road capable vehicle.Keywords Bigger AND more cargo space and a bit more room = 4Runnner
If "offroad" were the only requirement, then FJ Cruiser - more off-road capable than either XTerra or 4Runner

I actually think the current generation Xterra is quite handsome...I hate to see it go...it is a dying breed.
Back on '05, I came really close in buying an Xterra over the 4Runner (because the salesman was being a jerk). But it worked out, and I got the 4Runner...never regretted it.
One of these day I may get a nice used Xterra for a project vehicle...

Agree! In fact I really prefer XTerra style compared to the Runner or the FJ. really enjoyed my first-gen XTerra (If only it were a 4WD and it not get totaled)

I agree - some complain that the Xterra hasn't changed much, but the look is timeless imo and still pretty sweet. I would get one again if I needed another vehicle and didn't want to spend more money on a 4Runner... and didn't live in a humid area.
I think the vehicles are in two separate classes though. There's a reason that the cost of a fully loaded Xterra < cost of a base 4Runner

Yep, the new 4Runner is meant to be posh- like the Pathfinder (with its soccer mom on heels ground clearance). The XTerra is a no-frills but capable vehicle like the FJ Cruiser, so those who expect velour and burlwood call the interior of either "cheap".

Well, I wouldn't quite put it in the Pathfinder category... esp the new one. I can't believe that's the direction they took.

That being said, I think Nissan did a commendable job making the vehicle as rugged and reliable as they could given their tight cost requirements.
I'm sad that 2014 may very well be the last production year of the Xterra. It has always been a vehicle true to it's purpose, and unwilling to "sell out" in the face of rising gas prices and trending crossover market (which are also the reasons it's not selling well anymore).
Definitely the best looking new SUV out there today if you ask me...
