2007 4runner Sport Edition - or shall I say... Plasti-dip Edition

How much abuse will it take on the wheels before it starts coming off?? My wheels are looking a little run down just looking at options of cleaning them up before winter sets in again.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I guess I'll keep the look for awhile!

As far as durability, I don't think it really matters. If you scrap up a place on the wheel you can just spray a couple more layers over it. This stuff really comes out more even than I thought it would.

Like Uneek said, even if just hides brake dust for a couple months... I'm happy haha

I'll post a few more shots in brighter conditions in an hour or so.

More photos... trying to show the real color.

And another comparison...

I've been considering this for a while and your post pushed me to it. I'm in the process of doing it right now, I wasn't going to do the lower part of the front bumper until I saw your pics and really liked it. Here's what I have so far, will post final daylight shots tomorrow:

It's going to look awesome with the contrast. I've seen a white 4runner with a black satoshi grill and a black lower front portion that looked phenomenal.I'm not yet willing to chop up my grill though.

Hope it is all going smoothly!

Wheels and lower bumper look great! I don't like the grill- I would get the limited grill which is painted to match the body...

Yeah I'm still up in the air about it too. I really like Darkie3495's setup (he has the black wheels with the limited edition color-matched grill). Anyways, I'll rock it for awhile until I get bored again.

I think it looks good. But if you do get bored, you could always do a satoshi grille and keep the plasti-dip look.

I do have a question though...did you plasti-dip your lugs also?

Just wondering..if you saw a used 4runner on a car lot, with black rims, all the chrome painted, badges taken off and jacked up with aftermarket rims/tires...would you buy it? (price being equal to an identical one that this hasn't been done to)

I probably would not--because it would seriously make me wonder what else the PO did to it.

thats the beauty of plasti dip. you can just peel it right off if you dont want it on there anymore.

In that scenario, that "jacked up" 4runner would appeal to a different type of buyer and not necessarily a buyer such as yourself.

A buyer who is more knowlegdeable in the mods added to the 4runner may be willing to choose that one if they are getting over $3000 in mods for the same price as a pure stock one.

When buying used, you are always weary of how the previous owner treated the car regardless how it looks on the lot. Most of the mods that members do are reversible to some extent. So that basically stock vehicle may have spent years "jacked up", wheeled hard and returned to stock when traded in.

I guess I'm just old...but I don't get the whole black rim, blacking out the chrome, or "debadging" thing.

Joe, I'm getting old too. And sometimes I wonder why I do the things I do. My track record would suggest that when the vehicle is bought with the specific intent of being a "toy" then I can't leave it alone. I just like modifying my toys. It's a hobby and an outlet. Like I tell my wife, "it's better then me going out boozing and chasing women." As for the "debadging" thing I can't speak to that. I prefer leaving them on.

30 years ago I took a perfectly good Datsun 280-ZX, lowered it, blacked it out, put a 6-pack Weber and a few other things on it.

Some years later I bought a Harley Davidson and did the opposite. I chromed everything (including nuts and bolts) except for the frame and sheet metal.

Then came a Dodge Viper. Although it remains primarily stock, there are a few mods.

With that kind of track record, the 4Runner wasn't going to stay stock long. My Honda Civic Hybrid which is not a "toy" but my daily driver remains 100% bone stock.

Once again, I agree with you 100%! :D. I'll just copy and paste a post I made on the Mods against resale thread.

For the most part, the money you pay for mods are for your enjoyment at the time you're using the car. Unless you remove the mods and resell them when you put your car up for sale, that mod money is usually gone. That is if you kept all your oem parts for reinstallation.

My 4Runner for example has a very narrow market audience. If I were to sell it to someone that has some knowledge of the components and has the same intended use then I could recoup some of the costs. Most of the general public in the market would rather not have the mods I made. If and when I sell my 4Runner, I would be marketing to a very specific crowd.

If I was in the market for a car, I would prefer bone stock. At least with that, I have a pretty good idea of what I have. A highly modded car is questionable unless you have firsthand knowledge of the work done. Of course you can pay a mechanic to go over all the work done with a fine tooth comb.
