2007 4runner Sport Edition - or shall I say... Plasti-dip Edition

I also like the look of your wheels, too, but I'm up in the air about doing it to my own wheels. Did you just tape around the tires and go for it?

The nice thing about the plasti-dip is that if you don't like it on your wheels, just peel it back off. I decided I didn't like the black PAINT on my wheels a few months back and spent multiple weekends stripping the paint off, re-sanding, and spray-paintint them back to silver, boy do I regret not knowing about plasti-dip when I painted my wheels...

I used (and I believe the OP did too) index cards around the wheel, then tape them down to prevent overspray.

Just got back from 1000 mile trip. I did the center grill and bottom panel a few months ago. Washed all the bugs off, no loose plastic coming off and damage anywhere.

I already had the center bar painted black from last year (regular spray paint) but it was REALLY chipped up, I'm hoping the stretchy texture/nature of the Plasti Dip will make it less vulnerable to chips.

I wanna see some on a salsa red too!!!

This looks quite good -- I've got a titanium silver '06, and I've had the front grill sprayed satin black for a while after the original chrome got a nasty chip in it. I've had to re-spray it about twice due to chipping. This last time, though, I went pretty thick with it and it hasn't chipped yet.

If it chips again, I'll probably look into Plasti-Dip. Truthfully, I like the look of the black grill/chrome emblems better than the stock grill. I also considered painting the lower section below the grill, as well, and tried to visualize what it would look like -- I'm glad somebody else did it. I really like it, and may go for it.

Yeah I'd go for the lower section. Mine has held up great. I didn't tape around the tires. i just slid index cards in between the wheel and tire... Takes much less time and works just as well! Even if you accidentally spray plasti-dip where you didn't mean to, just wait for it to dry and you can peel/rub it off.

Thanks man! It looked good while it lasted. It's actually back to the factory silver color now; see my previous post about my tire shine mistake. Other peoples' plasti-dip wheels have held up fine for over a year.

Britton406 : Your picture was the one that gave me the idea to plasti-dip the front center section black. I'm not quite convinced as to how the Satoshi grill mod would look on mine (EDIT: forgot that you have the real deal Jaos Aura ), but I love the look on yours. The contrast can't be beat!

Hey buddy,

I've always loved the color of your wheels (hence the inspiration). I had the black plasti-dip look...

But I like yours a lot better. I'm not prepared for the whole powdercoat process, so I'm going to re-plasti-dip them and then spray paint a color (not sure which one yet) that will best match the tube steps and roof rack.

We'll see how it turns out....

EDIT: What's your same concept/different execution mod? Or are you going to leave us hanging ?

Haha sorry! Let the record show, initially I just sprayed the entire grill (emblem and everything) and the bottom-center portion of the front bumper.

Then I peeled the plasti-dip off the top chrome piece because I thought it was too much. Then I peeled the plasti-dip off the center chrome piece (and the emblem) because I thought it was still too much.

I left the bottom chrome piece plasti-dipped.

I then changed my mind and re-sprayed the middle the section and after it dried, simply peeled the plasti-dip off the emblem... and I FINALLY LIKED IT!

Woo-Hoo! Next up... maybe I'll finally make my mind up about the wheels!

Get the gun metal gray FJ TRD wheels for your ride. They would be sick, or at least gray. If the nerf bars are the same as the 06 Galactic Gray Sport the IE9 spray paint from Automotive Spray Paint custom matched | Aerosol Touch Up | AutomotiveTouchup | 888-710-5192 works pretty well. That's what I used and it turned out close. Definitely not a match because I used clear coat on the wheels which makes them shiny while the nerf bars are flat. Below are a couple low quality pics but you should get the idea. BTW bad camera angle for the second pic, the rear bumper was an inch from the ground.

Your 4runner looks great!!! Awesome link to the touch-up paint. I actually really need that for my scratched up front bumper. For the wheels, I'm wanting a slightly more grayish hue (OCD I know) Haha.

It's not much of a difference, but I really like it. Just enough contrast, not black, not body-colored, but just enough lol. I'll see how close I can get with Home Depot paint. I'll be sure to post the results (probably multiple results).

My only thought is that it probably won't look as cool on the Sport Edition wheels as it does on the Limited wheels, but we'll see.

Thanks! No worries, when I was painting them I started to get worried because it was going on really dark. I think I need another round of clear coat to help lighten it up. I love the pic of his where the dirt is on the wheels in some forest. The contrast is awesome.

Painted over plasti-dip with Rustoleum Hammered Dark Gray Spray paint. One can did all 4 wheels. It's a close match in color to the nerf bars, but just a touch lighter.

I'm gunna try plasti dipping my spare sport edition wheel to see how the black looks with my salsa red :frog:. I have a matte black/black powder coat theme anyway, so these wheels should look amazing in black!

Tomorrow is a half day at school, or as I'd like to think of it, a 4 hour drying interval after the first coat :flipoff:
