2007 Radio in 2005 Dash

Hey guys. I did a quick search through tapatalk and didn't see anything specific, so here I ask: Has anyone simply upgraded their 03-05 Runner radio with an 06-09 head unit?

I want(ed) a stock radio that had aux capability, so I bought an 07 head unit. This was almost four years ago and I didn't do enough research. I never installed it due to time constraints until today. Well. It doesn't fit at all. I didn't know there would be such a massive difference in size between the two unit faces.

If anyone has done this or seen a thread on how it worked out, please point me in the right direction. I got the unit plugged in and it works great. If only it fit...

I don't mind trimming (if it can be made to look smooth) or if there's no hope I'd like to go ahead and start shopping for an appropriately aged unit. Thanks for the help in advance, I'm just stumped.

You mean it doesn't physically fit? That's odd because the openings shouldn't be any different. Are the brackets lined up correctly?

Alternatively you could always try this route if you can't get it to work but it should since other 200 mm Toyota units work. Check out this thread.

there are 2 different factory radio sizes(basic am/fm,cd and the premium jbl) as well as 2 different sized openings in the center dash. you can try looking on ebay for a larger opening version dash

Really? I always thought all 4th gens has the 200mm opening except for the ones that came with the tomtom gps unit and even then its just a trim piece that Toyota added on.

yup it's true! metra, scoche, etc offer 2 part#'s for different trim kits when installing aftermarket radios.

one set is a pair of filler wings that mount to the sides of the radio to fill in the smaller style opening.

the other kind is a beveled frame a radio sits into to fill up the larger style opening.

Aha! This radio is the jbl sythesis premium without rse. My stock system had synthesis and the cassette deck, also no rse. I was trying to keep it as stock as possible ay the time. However, without aux or sat, the unit wouldn't have supported my original plan. Now I'm using a BT45-Toy and it wouldn't have mattered as much. Go figure.

Ok... I bet the 06-09 trim won't match up properly, though. If I can find one with a good return policy, I'll let you guys know how it goes. Alternatively, since I can sacrifice some functionality of the the BT45 and purchase another 05 model and be completely stock, but I'd rather have full steering controls. You lose track controls going this route.

This may be a job for a bit if sanding rather than swapping. Apparently, if I hate it, its not hard to replace. Vs. Buying all parts needed...
