2008 4R, Cigarette lighter...ummm???

I just got a 4R less than a week ago. Call me crazy, but I don't think there is a lighter. I have found the one port inside the center console, but I need something to power my radar detector..and I don't want a cord running from my center console to the windshield.


Help.

You're not crazy. The ashtray & lighter is an option. You can buy it via the net or stealer and install it yourself, or pay your stealer to do it. Search the forum for "ashtray".

As for the help, there are many smoking cessation products and programs to choose from...

I've seen those for mine and all it does is puts a cig lighter right next to the other one. They are both in the same location.

The thing I've always done is hardwired it to my ignition fuse so that the radar detector powered on and off with the key. Then I installed the radar detector up high in the tinted area so no one could see it. That's the best way to do it if you ask me but yes it is much more work. How long or how much driving do you plan on doing? Might be worth while if you plan alot. Have a stereo shop rig it in for you.

Placing it in the tinted area will dramatically reduce the detectors performance. Check it out on any radar detector website. (ie: escort, valentine, etc.)

There's no need to hide it unless you think it's an eyesore. Only Virginia and Washington D.C. currently ban radar detector use in the United States. Everywhere else they are legal.

I run a V1 - got it for the bike but put in in the 4R for long trips. I have mine up hight - shooting thru the tint? Never saw that as and issue - have to rethink that one? I put it up high to be stealth - can't see it from the outside. The V1 shoots front and rear - another reason for up high. I also tuck my line behind the sun visor and down the pillar. I just tuck it between the door and dash to keep it out of the way. Then it goes once around the turn stalk and behind the wheel and pluged in. Out of the way enuff for my part time use. If I ran a radar full time I would hard wire it like I did onthe bike so no need to plug and unplug.

Think about hard wireing it to the bottom of the cig port. That's what I did with my Sirius.

I have a 2003 4Runner and the 2nd 12V outlet is underneath a small cover right behind the front cup holder (toward the driver).

It is one of those push down to open covers. There is also a change / small item tray right next to it.

Yes, mounting it high is ideal, but not behind the tint, or you might as well keep it on your sun visor. Most sites will discourage you from using visor mounts because of this reason, so why mount it on the window and have the same problem? The best place for them (according to radar sites) is in the very middle of your window, which is definitely not stealth. That's why many people put it next to their rear view mirror or directly below it, but BELOW the tint.
