I always was under the impression that if you let air out of the tires you get better traction? I'm actually pretty sure of this.
Less air in the tire = more surface area contacting the ground.
True with regard to sand/rock/dirt/dry pavement, etc. but not true when you're talking about water or ice. With water (or ice to a lesser degree) you're looking for less surface area which creates more pressure per square inch to "sink" you through the material that's slick.
