Just to satisfy my education, I read thru the other threads too but couldn't find an answer.

How is the TRD unit different from the stock airbox? both are in the same location and from my observation, pull from the same fender spot.
Why didnt toyota take advantage of the hood scoop?

The hood scoop is completely cosmetic and nonfunctional. If yours doesn't have one ask to see someone elses with the hood open. There is a company now making a hood with a functional ram air scoop but I haven't seen it discussed in here. Only a post about it on Facebook.

The stock hood scoop if converted to be functional, would probably have to grow in height to be advantageous. It gets tucked into the boundary layer pretty quickly and 'ram air' at these vehicles speeds is not a tremendous advantage to the engine.

The TRD unit looks very similar to the stock airbox, and the reason is that Toyota did a good job on the stock design. There are some tweaks to the airflow of the entire intake (fender well intake shovel scoop vs bell mouth, and some other tweaks). The tweaks in performance between the two designs are pretty much not noticeable except for acoustics.

Just so I'm getting the "picture" on what I'll have to purchase on my own if I go with the Camelback individual part purchase...

(1) Hose, 5/32” ID X 20” <-- #13 on the exploded diagram?
(1) Convoluted Split Loom , 15” <-- ???
(3) Nylon Tie Strap, Tree Mount <-- #19 on the exploded diagram?
(3) Nylon Tie Strap, 6” <-- #18 on the exploded diagram?
(1) Plug, Plastic Tree Clip <-- ???

All other necessary parts are included when you go with the individuals parts (other than silicone spray)?

Sorry to seem like I'm beating a dead horse on this, but I'm hoping to do this myself -- when my TE gets here -- and my OCD is kicking in.

Your photo is showing the stock intake tube. That gets replaced with the TRD parts (#6 below):

Right, however the stock intake seems to have two other "intake" tubes "T'd" into it.

What you're pointing at is a baffling system that cuts down on noise.

Agreed, on US models the hood scoop does nothing. However could be converted to function for a top mount intercooler.

That was perfect! I'll be ordering the TRD CAI (and probably an AFE dry filter eventually)... got word that my dealer should be provided with my VIN next week. Hopefully within a week or so after that and I'll have it!

Can you explain how those two boxes provide baffling? I’m being serious not meaning to sound like a smart ass. On a side note, I remember when I was shopping for one of my Tacoma’s and the salesman was explaining how a particular box off the intake was for evacuating water in case you suck some in.

Thank you for the information. My last SUV, 05 Nissan Xterra, I did an airbox mod that really helped out the throttle response. Saw this and just finished the install. I did notice that the throttle response improved right away. As far as the rest, who knows. 16 SR5. Parts ordered from Camelback Toyota as listed before.
