2010 4R 4.0 V6 Multiple Significant Oil Leaks

Ok, so perhaps round 2 here. 5,000 miles later, and I've thrown a CEL. It presents intermittently with blinking 4LO light and VSC light solid. Seems to only occur after engine has been running for some time, and overnight, it clears itself until the next day, when it will appear again once the engine gets warmed up. When the CEL is on, I feel like the engine gets loud and a bit bogged down, centering right at about 2,000 RPMs. I can get it to go higher and as fast as I need it to, but it feels sluggish moving through the gears.

It's been sitting at the dealer and they came back with "cam pressure failure". I don't have details as he left me a message, but more soon...

Sounds like your truck is in limp mode. And it would probably be cam angle sensor failure. Basically, the ECU isn't getting feedback of the position of the cam, so it won't let you push the engine hard (hence the sluggishness). Cam angle sensor is a super easy fix assuming the cam angle sensor is the issue. Literally a single bolt on the head cover holds it in. It could also be a half-lock (basically, they didn't get the harness clip locked in when they reassembled and it worked its way loose).

Does not sound like a limp mode at all to me. You totally know when it is in limp mode as the engine is just trying to survive and will not rev up much as the ECU alternates spark and fuel (like a rev limiter).

This sounds like it is VVT-i related. Oil pressure is used to run the cam phasers. Without enough pressure (controlled by a valve) it cannot advance the valve timing.... Sounds like they have a pressure sensor. My guess would be the control valve has debris in it.

Can't say that I have ever torn into a Toyota motor much, but have seen similar problems on other makes.

I hate to dig up an old thread. But I wondered what happened in the end. Did the dealership remedy the drivability issue? Did the OP unload his 4runner?

Our 2012 Camry had to get a short block under warranty, a $8000 dollar repair thankfully it was covered at 55k miles. Engine had a bad knock when warmed up at low RPM. Seems every Subaru I see has this same sound. Lesson learned when you only pay 25k for a car it's probably junk.

I don't believe that cheap cars means bad cars. I've had a Civic Si brand new that I left stock and drove the piss out of and sold and barely lost any money. I also test drove a Ford Fiesta ST and thought it was fantastic. My 2007 Honda S2000 was around 30,000 bux and I find it to be fantastic too with zero problems.

Anyhow... back on topic, I wonder what the final outcome was on the OP's engine.

Man reading some of these problems is kinda steering me away from a 4Runner lol....or at least really making me want a yota ext.warranty!

Go visit a JGC forum.

I admit I haven't read this thread, but I'm going to go ahead and say that the vast majority of the reported problems are nothing at all (injector or roller cam noise, downshifting auto trans, etc) or isolated defects that are found early in the warranty and fixed (or maybe not fixed, but still isolated, none the less). This is a very well proven and reliable chassis and drivetrain.

Ohhh theres a reason I don't drive a Grand Cherokee lol. Actually the Wrangler is the only Chrysler product ill drive...and yes I've had a few issues with it too, but i meant more jest in my comment than seriousness.

Aww how did I miss this? This would have been an interesting one to be involved in!

Needless to say this is a very very weird and rare case of failure. I haven't seen one like this let alone heard of one of the 1GR-FE's failing in this manner, so I wouldn't be too worried Vwright14

The 25K comment makes no sense and is only based on your crappy experience. Ask anyone who spent the money on an Audi whether they're happy with its reliability.

The 25k doesn't negate a poorly made vehicle. .. but I could totally see where his frustration could come from. I had a 2000 mustang get bought back under lemon law. ... did that stop me from buying another one? Hell no lol

This is the only example of this issue in the 5ht gen section, so I think you will be good. Extended warranty certainly gives better peace of mind, but most of us went Toyota for a reason. If I had gone JGC, the best extended warranty known to man would be mandatory. I don't think OP posts any more, which is a bummer because I sure would like to know how this ended.

Everyone in my family now has Toyotas and each of us (all 8) got to this conclusion on our own. My sister bought a new Audi A4 and finally got rid of it for a Lexus IS after the Audi's engine had to be replaced under warranty TWICE. In the several million miles that we've driven on Toyotas, I can't remember one issue any larger than a window coming off the track. My dad finally got rid of his LS400 at 480k miles because the backlight for the radio screen went out. This level of consistency and quality doesn't happen with other manufacturers.

Hey guys, sorry I've been distant from this thread. The CEL ended up being a cam sensor connector that was not fully connected when they rebuilt the engine. So all is well so far.

I'm up to 77k now with no further issues (cross fingers). I'm definitely holding on to her. No way I could get the value out of her that I've put in. Actually just put a Warn M8000-S on the ARB, and completely overhauled the sound system with JLs. New amp but kept the original receiver and controls for factory look and feel.

Let me know if you have any more questions I can answer. This was certainly a (bad) surprise.

That's good news. Our 2012 Camry had its engine replaced last month then ran into right after that it's still in the shop!

How did you install the Warn? Looking at options since there are a few different ways that the winch can be installed but prefer totally hidden.

I got same issue

I got same issue just today, dealer called saying I have major leakage! I too lightly used the car, and it has been well maintained. Any ideas what it caused your to leak?

Last weekend my buddy was under the truck doing an inspection while I was finishing my Lightforce install up front. He found a significant oil leak that seemed to come from just under the valve cover gaskets on both sides of the engine. I couldn't believe it. My 2010 has just over 65k miles on it and has been mostly a daily driver for me here in Dallas (unfortunately). He and I were both quite convinced the leak had been there for some time, as evidenced by the various locations and dried oil residue we found (so much for the 265145678916 point inspection BS...).

When I took it to the dealer, they called me back and said that oil was leaking from the valve covers, timing chain, and the crankshaft. Basically, a complete blowout. I literally was speechless. I've driven 4Rs my entire life, putting well over 300k miles on my 92 before it had any major oil leaks.

The dealer tried to pin it on me, saying I caused an increase of pressure in the engine that caused blowouts (even though they still have not determined root cause). The truck has been meticulously maintained throughout its short life and has never seen water or anything other than some easy trails when camping.

First of all, has anyone seen something like this? Any advice for me if you have? Second, I am justified in thinking this is ridiculous, right? I've had multiple warranty repairs on this truck (ALL door lock assemblies, A/C fan blower assembly, a couple other minor ones), but this crosses the line.

Meanwhile, I'm gearing up for a big fight with my extended warranty provider, and the dealership is telling me they will have to remove the entire engine, tear it down and rebuild it.

Would love to hear anyone's thoughts about this. Just some conversation will be good therapy for me. Thanks!
I am new here too but thought to ask if anyone else has this same leakage problem as well?!! What the cause could be, I too have maintained the car very well.
