Why not have IRS? I know I am about to get flamed for that but what is so bad about IRS? Why do most people hate IRS? I understand it is easier and cheaper to lift a solid axle. But what about us do not care if I can buy a 6 inch lift for $600. Wouldn't it be just as nice to get a Total Chaos long travel kit for the rear too. Yes it wouldn't be cheap. But damn, that would ride nice on the dirt roads and desert trails. And talk about articulation, each wheel having 12 inches of its own travel. That would be sweet. Sorry, but I am not one to find the deepest longest mud hole and see if I can make it. Give me some technical stuff. Something that requires more thought and planning. Not just "if you have 35's and a winch, you should be fine". This is not meant to be a rant or sarcasm. I would think that if it is done right, then you will have a lot more ground clearance with IRS. Take a look at a Humvee. Throw on some longer control arms and a coilover, and that is the ride for me.
 
IRS is far weaker than a solid live rear axle - and atually there is less articulation with an independent suspension setup in both front and rear. When offroading, the rear of the car is subjected to the most abuse. Furthermore, the gearing and general structure of a solid rear axle are much stronger. Why do you think traditional off road vehicles have solide front and rear axles? Another thing - when you load up a car with irs with lots of heavy junk in the rear - it sags, but you say so does solid rear axle; however, the tires of a solid axle will still be flat on the ground. The suspension in a solid rear axle compresses straight up and down when loaded with weight. An IRS setup cannot do this. An irs setup must compress up and in due to the arms.

If you want an irs suv - get a pathfinder or equivalent as it will be pretty much useless offroad.

Good Point, I never quite understood all that. Always thought that the Humvee was quite capable so it couldnt be that bad.

Humvees are also notorious for having zero wheel travel! And lets not forget that Humvees are military vehicles...i doubt any manufacturer will make a suspension as stout as a Humvee on high production civilian vehicle.

Total Chaos may be a good option for IFS, but i would bet that a Total Chaos setup still has less wheel travel than a solid axle of comparable modification.

Exactly, people think that they can take H1's rock crawling and it will dominate; but, it sucks in the rocks really.

The H1 suspension was designed to carry troops over rough/rutted roads, do steep hill climbs where lateral articulation is not necessary and do stream crossings.

After reading the details again they will not have IRS. First off - it says major changes. Completely redisigning the rear suspension is a MAJOR change. Secondly, they would not offer KDSS on a car that doesnt have a rear axle. They again would have to completely redisgn a system they have used since 04 on the GX. Toyota is going to slap the same old 8.5'' (I think) rear diff under it. I can almost guarantee that mechanically (frame, rear axle, front IFS) the 4th gen and the 5th gen will be nearly identical save for body styling. I dont think their will be a new 6spd transmission because again thats a major change. Furthermore, I dont think the V6 has the need for that many gears let along a 4banger. Last but not least, there will be no manual transmission. Face it, the 1% of 4runner owners that have any interest in their car are on this board and I can safely say that few of them would want a manual trans. Toyota is not going to put a manual trans in a car designed to compete with Ford Explorers.

My $.02 we'll see how much of it is true in a couple of months.

Yeah, but who cares when the new V6 is more powerful than the V8? It has a little more HP, but a little less torque. Overall, it should be an excellent replacement and maybe even offer a bit better fuel economy.
 
I bet that Toyota/Lexus will force you to go with a GX470 if you want a V8. They have to differentiate between these two vehicles a little more.

Well, one can always hope. I can't imagine a 4 cylinder with the power stated there, but only being offered in automatic. Well, we'll see soon enough I guess. I honestly don't care if only the 4 cylinder is available in manual, I just want to be able to buy a new 4Runner and I don't see that ever happening unless they bring back the manual. I guess I'll know in a few months if I should keep looking for a 3rd gen, or maybe go to a new Xterra, just cause I kinda feel iffy about getting a 10+ year old vehicle. My current car's giving me so much troubles that a new car sometime soon may be inevitable for me.
 
I sure hope the 5th gen will only have 4 or 6 cylinders and not 8. I can't imagine offroading with a v8 that had 400+ horsepower, one wrong move on the accelerator and your spotter is toast.

I would rather have a 4/6 cylinder suv that gets 20mpg+ than a v8 with 400+horespower that gets 11mpg.:bash:
 
That .pdf shows some nice things, but I'm still holding out for interior and exterior shots before I get too excited.

I too want the 4.6 V8, that sucker would fly... But after last year's gas prices (I have the 4.7l 4WD, the non-VVti 2003), I think the 6 is a better option for me.

Don't worry, the minute I buy the 5th Gen V6, Toyota will announce a V8 model.
 
Dont' know how true this is, or if it's gonna be a Canada only thing, but the salesman told me that the new 4Runner's 4 cylinder will only be available with FWD and 4WD only available with the V6. He said it looks like a smaller Sequoia. He's a Japanese guy and was telling me how Toyota is actually pronounced Toyoda but they changed it to Toyota just cause the name Toyota flowed nicer than Toyoda. He also tried looking for the 2010 info on the Japanese Toyota site and said he just printed information about it a few days ago, but he couldn't find it.

The funny thing was that all I asked him was "do you have any 2009 SR5 models available?"

Then he said, "Do you know that there is a redesign for 2010? Do you want to see how it'll look like?" and then started giving me all the details about the 2010 that was revealed in that pdf. The only things he told me extra was that the 4 cylinder available in FWD only and the V6 has VVTI, and then gave me the history of Toyota. In the end, he said he didn't have any 09 SR5's. My wife was very puzzled, we asked a simple question and we ended up with a half our history lesson about Toyota...

So it looks like the antenna will be in the glass on some models, but definitely not the SR5.

It also appears that the Trail Edition lives on, but I hope the 4wd goodies are also available on the other trim lines also.

An equally powerful V6 still won't have the torque curve and smoothness of a V8. And ,sorry to say, but most V6s sound like vacuum cleaners compared to V8s.

Yes thank you, finally someone who agrees with me. The current V8 has 85% of its available torque at 1300rpm which is actually ridiculous. The v8 loves to crawl and has incredible low end grunt.

I also agree. Evan at the same HP the torque will just not be there. What sucks is my lease is up on my 06 in Aug. I was loving the idea of the 4runner maybe being a little bit larger with a new 300hp V8. I was stoked. Now I
 
If you have maintained your car I see no reason not to buy it out. You are using it for what is was designed for. What other mid size SUV comes from the factory with a class 4 hitch!? Furthermore, the A750f is one of the most bulletproof transmissions ever built. Additionally, the V8 is probably one of the best engines toyota has ever made and one of best engines imo you can get in a car. Bobtheoilguy shows that even with 150k plus on the engine, oil analysis is still better than 95% of the engines that he has analyzed even with 7500mile OCI's on toyota motor oil.


I say keep it!!!
