2010 Limited Sunroof Exploded today!

I guess at speed there could be a significant enough pressure difference inside the cabin and out to cause this. The air being forced up and over the windshield probably creates an area of low pressure in the center of the roof.

Being pushed upwards could also have something to do with the rubber lined frame of the glass - when the glass breaks - the track the glass sits in is probably pinching it - It is watertight afterall so there is some moderate pressure on the rubber. So perhaps pressure from the seal/track is causing the shards to buckle upwards.

Anyway - just two notions I pulled out of my ass.. I wouldn't assume it's scientific fact but they seem plausable enough.

It happened to me - anything come of it?

What did you end up doing?

Happened to me on the highway - 67 degrees, 2016 SR5
I had no traction at my dealer and had to go through insurance. I had a dashcam facing both was and watched my whole commute with no objects.

(had trouble with the audio - but yes sounded like a gunshot)

Apparently there's a class action suit about them changing the glass supplier and this becoming more frequent?

Do you have tinted windows? Did the sunroof get tinted?

When I got my windows tinted, I asked them if they could tint the sunroof because I wanted it a little darker. They told me they do not tint any sunroofs because they have had them explode. I didn't buy their reasoning but I also didn't get my sunroof tinted.

Not fun. I purposely got my TRDORP without a sunroof since I knew it would have a full roof rack and thinking this problem could be more likely when offroad. But it seems more likely to happen at high speed on the road ....

MY wife was comming home from work today when she thought a gun had gone off next to her ear. The sunroof on our 2010 4-Runner Limited had exploded. Thankfully the inner cover was closed or she would have been coverd with glass! As you can see from the pictures the glass is pushed up from the inside so I know it was'nt hit from the outside. Has anyone else had this happen? I have owned a lot of vehicles with sunroofs and have never had this happen. Needless to say It goes to the dealer first thing in the morning. It has less than 2000 miles on it!

Fortunately she wasn’t injured. Could’ve been something external but maybe there was a tiny hairline fracture from a previous contact that eventually shattered from the road vibration.

After reading some of the other posts, it very well could be a manufacturer defect. In any case, I’d be more concerned with the new vehicles with the larger glass panels installed in roofs.
