2010 SR5 Lift for On-road Performance Only

The problem is people are comparing the 4Runner's handling to a BMW or some other apples to oranges comparision.

This is the real problem - I own both - The 4Runner is just fine for what it is, some of the guys on here create a false hysteria that takes very minimal issues and makes newer people have a false since of what's actually going on.

That said I'm planning Bilstein 5100's set at 2.5" and 895e's with 5100's + BFG TA KO 285/70/17 - not because I need it, but because I want it.

there are lots of options to achieve what this thread is asking. One big question i have not heard anyone ask is are you doing the work yourself or having a shop do it? If you are not capable/willing, I would consult the shop you will be using on all this- they should be able to recommend a solution easily based on what you tell them you are looking for.

Here is one good source for info and solutions for the lifts we are talking about-
03-Current Toyota 4Runner Equipment and Accessories at Wheeler's Off-Road

changing out the rear shocks from oem will not lift or carry anything "higher", choosing a stock height but stiffer rear spring would.
If i was keeping my runner on the road but wanted a level stance and little tighter feel, only a mild front lift and and heavier valving is required. aka- front "struts" that reuse oem springs and rear shocks that are a little better valved.
If you have the limited with xreas, you must change both at the same time anyway, unless you are only adding a front spacer.

thank you for the explanation, Engineer.

I agree with Philsey, though, leaving rear shocks OEM doesn't make much sense to me.

so, in order to accomplish this, i'd just need 4x5100 Bilsteins.. correct?

Yes. Even though the front and rear are 5100's, they are different.

You would want to put the plain 5100 Bilsteins on the rear. Remember that shocks are for "dampening" the spring in compression or extension. A normal shock will not accomplish any lift. The shock will not enable you to carry extra weight in the rear. It will still sag. What it WILL do if you carry more weight is stiffen the spring as it extends and compresses, dampening the effect. Air bags are best to keep the "sagging" minimal.

A Bilstein 5100 fot the front has an extra piece: A collar that is adjustable that fits to the bottom of the spring. Adjusting this collar will effectively "lift" your vehicle's front end. I think it has three points of adjustment.

Thanks for the info.

thank you very much sir!

I don't see them list any different 5100s for the rear.. or am I just blind?

IMHO, perfectly said!

Just to make this 100% clear before I figure out ordering....

Adjustable 5100 in the front to lift it slightly, making it level out, stiffen slightly. Non-adjustable in the rear but not to increase height but help stiffen the suspension.

Just a little confused as I've seen some people adding spacers, more adjustable struts, coils etc. I definitely notice the body roll and would like to tone it down. Hoping with the stiffer struts and beefier sways, that will be accomplished.

Lastly, a higher spring rate in the rear will help with cargo/towing sag? Meanwhile the front springs do not have to be changed out?
