2011 sr5 tire queuestion

Hi There.

so we all know the stock tire size is 265 70 17.. most the questions here are about how big you can go.. My case is a little different.

I have a FREE set of 265 65 17.. and just trying to figure out if these will be ok.. or will i end up with a problem..

Just trying to save some money

any comments would be appreciated..

It's okay. The "265" represents the 'Width' of the tire in millimeters (265 mm). The "70" represents the height of the sidewall wrt the 'percentage' of the width of that tire (70%), and the "17" is the rim diameter. The tire that you've mentioned has a 5% lower profile than the stock tire does which is fine; it will tend to handle better at higher speeds and on corners than the stock tire! rgds

Thanks! I always learn new things from the folks on TR4.org. Reading your explanation made me wonder why sidewalls are sized as a percentage -- the "aspect ratio" -- and how that maps into handling.

From the Yokohama website:
"A tire with a lower aspect ratio responds to lateral force more effectively than a tire with a higher aspect ratio. The aspect ratio affects steering stability. Generally, the shorter the sidewall, or the lower the aspect ratio, the less time it takes to transmit the steering input from the wheel to the tread. The result is quicker steering response. Aspect ratio also affects the tread contact patch. As a rule, a low profile tire produces a wider tread contact patch. This wider tread contact patch creates a stiffer footprint that reduces distortion and provides improved cornering traction."

Finally, somebody going with smaller tires and "increasing their mpg..."

I hate to disappoint anybody but... it's the "Larger tire" that is able to travel a greater distance with the same amount of rotation as the smaller tire, resulting in lower fuel consumption. The smaller tire has to produce more revolutions to travel the same distance as the bigger tire; all things being equal! :tea:

I hear ya rigtec, and you are right, I was just factoring in the smaller tires weighing a few pounds less per tire, thus resulting in better mpg :peace:

The smaller tires will out perform the larger tires regarding X-line acceleration, hill climbing, and just in raw ability to get that 'Torque/H.P.' to the ground. "There's ALWAYS a 'compromise' that must be made between power and economy" but... "Never a free lunch!" :D
