Has anyone figured out what part is causing them to partially retract or extend? Thing tried to eat my wifes foot the other day so now I have the job of figuring it out. It would be cool if you could point me in the right direction.

I don't have a limited, so no auto running boards and I will be of no further assistance in this thread, but perhaps some additional details may help others address your query.

When did this start?
Does it function some of the time correctly?
Does it fully extend and then partially retract only to fully extend again, or vice versa?
Does it only do this when a particular side or door is opened / closed?
Is the override switch (if there is one), set to a special setting?
Other details? Just got out of the shop, just had it pressure washed to get the winter salt grime off...

Zero experience with the 4Runner retractable running boards, but I had a a mountaineer with them and it developed similar issues. Never tried to eat a foot, but they did get stuck and would partially extend/ retract.

essentially, take them off, clean the joints and lube them and possibly replacing their motors was the fix that I saw on line like their explorer counterparts.

Sure they look slick, but too much of a pain in the ass for me.... then the transmission died, so I go a 4Runner.

When did this start? On and off since about 1.5 years since new

Does it function some of the time correctly? Yes

Does it fully extend and then partially retract only to fully extend again, or vice versa? Drivers side partially extends, copilot side partially retracts

Is the override switch (if there is one), set to a special setting? Auto

Nothing else of note.

I'm assuming safety features have debris.
