I think people are still catching up to current vehicle pricing where an Explorer can run 50k. Trucks and big American SUVs are 50-70k. 4Rs are down right cheap relative the the rest of the field (and awesome).

The Explorer is significantly bigger than the 4Runner and when priced at $50k it is loaded up with features that are unavailable in the 4Runner.

The Explorer has a 2" longer wheelbase, weighs 140 lbs less and has six more cubic feet of room. That's not significantly bigger. Maybe you were thinking of a Suburban.

Put it a different way. The 3rd row in an Explorer is actually usable. The 3rd row in a 4Runner isn't.

The 4 runner is for sure a great bargain in my eyes, especially if you go with a SR5 base 4 or 2 wheel drive. There is no wrong or right choice here. Lexus, Toyota, your just paying for the features you want. I wouldnt kick either out of my garage. Everyones opinions are all good. A friendly debate over a couple of the most reliable and best resale vehicles built. Kind of a win win. Most all the rest will be problematic and be worth little to nothing down the road. Go on a German, English or Domestic car forum. Seriously half the threads are about problems or this piece of shit. This forum has almost no complaining about problems. Discussing the pros and cons of barn doors, pretty cool knowing we picked trucks that make everything else out there second rate.

Why in the hell would you pay 50K for a Crossover Minivan? :fear:

I'd at least go for the Expedition or Tahoe, hell why not get a craptastic Pathfinder or LandRover while were talking about spineless (quite literal if you think about the fact they have a Unibody ) wanna be SUVs. :sad:

I dig them... even though in general I bag on the Lexus brand as a glorified Toyota, the fact is they have options in them I wish my 4runner had.

We rented a new body style Pathfinder and drove up and down Florida. The whole trip we kept saying this feels like the mini van we had when my kids were little just with doors instead of a slider. Thats why my wife wouldnt even get in a Highlander. She said no when I pointed it out with no hesitation as we walked by it at the dealer.

I would never even consider a new GX. However, there is some serious potential lurking behind those fancy badges and ugly running boards of the first gens.

The great thing about a used GX is just how lightly used many of them are. I saw a 2007 for sale the other day with 30k on the OD. It looked brand new for 20k that is a heck of a truck. And I have seen similar ones with higher miles for 10k. The fact that they suck the gas and are full time 4wd make them have poor resale here in the south.

A similar 4runner (a 4th gen) is near impossible to find in good shape. 4x4 4runners seem to be beaten on here, while GXs mainly sit in the garage.

If I got one, I would immediately lift it (eliminating the air bag suspension out back).. I need to do more research on them before picking one up. I want to understand what version of ATRAC they have. Some also have KDSS, but I would want to make sure it would still work properly without the air bag setup. The downside of the GX as an overland rig is even more electronic gizmos to go bad, with limited direct aftermarket support (however it is basically a 4th gen 120 under all that luxury)

I guess I got lucky with my truck. It was babied, well maintained with documentation, and had super low mileage (2003 my I purchased in 2014 with 34k miles.)

It has the V8, full time 4x4, cloth seats, sun roof, and interior construction with fewer rattles than my wife's 2013 RX. So when she sits next to a used GX (except for the leather and wood, which I've had before and don't really care for), a similar aged GX seems like little more than an expensive, curved L.

Side by side for the current new rides, the differences are more apparent.

I don't think it's a stretch, however, to say that Yoder decontented the 4runner to make more room for the GX in the American market.
