Somewhat related.
I've been thinking about picking up a gx470 (120 based). They seem to go pretty cheap now. I need to do a bit more research, but they look bad ass once tweaked a bit and most previous owners did no off-roading with them at all and took good care of them. They are all 4x4 also. It seem hard to find a nice 120 4x4 4runner, easy to find a GX in good shape.

This is a great idea, imo. I could not find one that was reasonable before buying our 4Runner. If you can be patient for one this is a great way to for exactly the reasons you gave.

I'm talking about the 120s/first gen (2002-2009). I've seen a few for about 10-14k that have ~100k miles, but look really well maintained. 05 seems to be an ideal year as it got a slight bump in power.

Funny thing is they still complained about a lack of power and a need for re-gearing it (at the time there were no options for the front diff).

Ok he is my daughters lifelong best friends fiance. We have become buddies because we get along and are in the same industry and have alot in common. We both own a piece of state legal medical marijuana shops. Next the GX460 is the truck my wife wanted. Actually she wanted the LX or a Land Cruiser even more. Our 06 Ml350 with126k is (shocker) too unreliable for road trips which is my wifes new passion since Obamacare cost her her corporate job. I was set on 0 miles and a Toyota or Honda and told her to pick something. No euro trash. I suggested 4 Runner. The Lexus choices are all too pricy for new and that was the only way I was buying this one time. Hell she put 10k on her new 4 runner in 3 months. I just love the feel of our new truck. The Lexus is overkill for me. Like Im trying to impress the world and frankly I dont need or care for all the extra gismos. Just me, more power to anyone who likes em. By the way my daily driver if she is using the 4 runner is a 91 Lexus Ls400. Best car ever. I just break out the ML350 if it snows and pray nothing new stops working. The Broncos let me down again.

I do envy the drivetrain, but otherwise the GX's don't do much for me. I do respect the fact that they are badge-engineered Prados, and I'm sure they're reliable and capable machines, just as our T4R's are. But the tarted-up Lexus-ness turns me off. The Prado (to me) is a little more honest and utilitarian, but then they go crazy with the chrome and other Lexus bling that kills it for me. YMMV.
That said, I wouldn't kick it out of bed in the morning. They're nice trucks, for sure. But I do prefer my SR5 Premium, even if I do wish it had a V8 and better tranny, maybe full-time 4WD...but whatever. You can go crazy with all the things you can wish for. I really think the T4R is more truck/$.

Lexus are not just flashy Toyotas, they are more refined Toyotas. The GX feels nothing like the 4Runner and the RX feels nothing like the Highlander. I test drove them all. Before I thought why spend 10k more on an RX instead of a Highlander... what a huge difference once you spend some time in them. Mom went with the RX.
I would love a GX but couldn't stand that swinging rear door. Where's the tailgate!!? That and the weird grills Lexus is slapping on all their cars...

I like the barn door. I had a Isuzu Trooper and a Mitsibushi Montero for many years both with barn doors and actually didnt mind them at all. The best is power tailgate though, like in my Ml350. That is addictive. We miss that bad in our 4 Runner. Will probably be on the Gen 6. If it is and you buy one go for it you will enjoy it for sure.

Agreed. I totally forgot about that. I was looking at a gallery of GX's and Prados once, kind of thinking, "What if?" and when I got to a pic of the rear door open it immediately quashed any latent desire that may have been brewing. Such a bad design. Toyota took a hit in the press, IIRC, for a similar design on the RAV4, which went to a liftback like the 'Runner after it's most recent redesign. I imagine it's even worse on the GX, with a much bigger (and heavier) rear door.

The barn door isnt terrible. Id rather have the liftgate, but Im used to it now.

I've driven both. The GX460 is certainly quieter and more refined, but I agree that the performance is underwhelming.
