While i haven't driven a 4r without KDSS, i can verify that my 2011 trail with KDSS handles awesome. From what i understand, the wheel articulation while off road and going over an obstacle between both the KDSS and Non-KDSS is exactly the same, so you arn't gaining more offroad ability. What the KDSS really helps is the on-road handling while still being a beast off road, by being able to "disconnect" the sway bars with KDSS it allows the use of much thicker sway bars. This in turns leads to much better handling. I remember when i upgraded the sway bar on my old subaru only by a 3 MM that the difference in handling was substantial. So the same thing happens with the 4r. The car stays super level around corners with not much body roll.

From what I understand, the TE still has the manual transfer case lever in the 2013, but the SR5 got updated.
Also, I'll be honest and say that, it's going to be tough to decide on KDSS or not just by us telling you about it. You can argue till the cows come home, and neither way is a clear winner.
With that said, I test drove a TE w/ KDSS and was impressed enough by it to not need to even see how a non-KDSS model handled. So I strongly suggest you just go drive one and see. Take it through a few curves at highway speeds and see if that's what floats your boat.

Just picked up my 2013 TE today after comparing for the past 3 months. Decision came down to Jeep GC and 4R TE. Have been Toyota man for 8 years starting with 2004- 4 runner sport. Jeep just didn't make the cut. For those who don't already know the 2013 has the Lever 4wd selector in 2013. Wife liked it so much she left the Lexus in the garage and took off with it. I may have a problem there. Anyway for my money the TE has no equal on the market for the money. I think this is the start of a beautiful frienship.

So far it seems to have worked....for now, maybe hiding to keys didn't hurt either :lmao:
