I see your point. That's been a very sore spot for me and source of buyer's remorse with my SR5. But, for every person like you who loved the black trim, there is some one else who likes the new colored trim. Toyota can't make everyone happy. I also understand wanting a TE to look different. I think it will, but more of a subtle difference like the 2010-2013 Canadian models. You're supposed to be buying a TE for capability and not looks anyway....Right?

My issue was with people hating the silver bumper (or painted flares) and saying it was an easy fix. Not such an easy fix. AND dropping $40K should have bought me a perfect blank canvas for aftermarket mods, not the beginning of fixing what I wanted from the factory, but I totally agree with you, it's all about preference and you'll never make everyone happy.

Now about buying a Trail for capability and not looks, well.........I'd say for the vast majority it's a little of both!

Ideally, Toyota should make black or color-keyed an option like Jeep does with Wranglers. But, unlike jeep, Toyota has to make a profit so that's not likely. And no doubt the 2010-13 TE does look much better. I would love to do TE conversion myself if I had the cash.

Just out of curiosity, how would you guys feel right now had Toyota never offered the black trim on the 10'-13' Trails models? Then would the 2014 Trail model with the color matched trim be a perfect blank canvas; and would you happily repaint the trim back to black to customize it to your own personal taste?

Hmmmm.....to be honest, the black trim probably would not be an issue had I never seen it. I would have bought my Trail in a minute even if the trim had all been Magnetic Gray. However, I would never have been able to live with the silver on the front and rear bumpers. To me it looks totally out of place, I hated it on the 4th gens too.

The front bumper cover just kills it for me also. Black trim, body color trim, silver paint, V-8, diesel, 6-speed manual, hover mode.....NOTHING can make up for that bumper!!!

I'm sure I'll warm up to it one day, but it's going to take a while!

Can't speak directly to 2010-2013 TE trim as haven't seen how it ages yet, but for many auto companies' black trim components (door handles, bumpers, fender trim, etc.), they"oxidize" over time becoming bleached in appearance requiring constant re-treatments of products like back-to-black. In addition, these black plastic components also make waxing a bit of a PITA as they absorb wax easily and are tough to remove that wax. So, while I too like the TE black trim, coming off a vehicle with these black component issues, I also see a definite upside to this change.

I do too!

Granted I am basing this solely on pictures like everyone else at this point, but for me the solid black interior changes with the Soft Tex are a great improvement. I am also finding I really like the exterior as well.

The black plastic on my front bumper and wheel well trim is getting beat up pretty good by road debris. It also seems to need attention (cleaning, preservative) more than vehicles I've owned in the past, especially considering this is my first car that has spent almost every night in the garage. I would have to say that IMO it is of inferior grade compared to my 80's and 90's Honda products.

The TE trim is not as soft as the interior black plastic, but it is still pretty much impossible to remove scuff marks and scratches...I have plenty of custom pin stripping that I gave up trying to fix. Best you can do is try to make it blend in with some plastic protectant like 303 aerospace protectant or something.

Happy to see some new features. I prefer the current style over this refresh, but it wouldn't keep me from purchasing one. Hopefully the new features get more people interested in the 4R over it's competitors. If we want these things to stick around, Toyota needs to see the sales numbers. The biggest complaints I've had and/or heard about the current-gen have been the lack of amenities, or as 1E lovingly puts it, "trinkets".

Per this article....

Otherwise, things look to be going as planned, with first drives scheduled sometime this summer and the 2014 Toyota 4Runner hitting showrooms towards the end of this year. That is, unless we get another notification saying that we should expect heartbreak, delays, and deprivation of parlor-trick items.

That's funny about the Party Mode button not returning. I guess it was one of those features that sounded good on paper, but in reality was pretty useless since, as Toyota PR pointed out, you can always use the audio controls to send sound to the back.

I'm looking forward to seeing one in person. Toyota is fortunate in that it has enough volume to have a fairly diverse SUV/crossover lineup vs. trying to address the broader market with a single vehicle.
