2014 MPG Question

I have a 2014 LE and have yet to get over 14mpg.... and that had a 60mile highway trip included to bump it that high...........

Hi Guys! I've had my SR5 premium for about a week now 2 weeks now. My MPG is pretty low. Says I'm at just under 13 mpg. Most of my driving is city driving. I have rarely hit the highway so far.

Is this normal? I've heard of winter gas? Or is it because I have had it for such short time? I'll most likely be getting my first full tank of gas this weekend.

Cmon bro......dont be too onion skinned..

Everyone here drives a T4r....make your number realistic bro...
In this case I dig actual experience rather than you physics, not that I hate numbers or theories.
I recently came from a 3000+ mile road trip from NJ to TX and back....Yes, thats how I broke in my 2014 4R, filled 10 times during the course of the trip and every fill the fuel gauge is always at E line or close to it.
Every each full tank I set a speed, 45-50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75 and 80.. and calculated it manually to be realistic. I want to know whats the best cruising speed in relation to mpg on my T4R.
My best mpg was 23 cruising @ 70 on the spot. Even 45 - 50 on flat road got nowhere near your 26mpg...

Now I ask you..... Did you run 45 mph on a full tank of gas on your 4R until close to E and filled it again? calculated it?.......If yes then holy macaroni..you are very lucky on your 4R.....maybe you have the well built most efficient 4R engine Toyota build..wheeewww

peace bro!

So you drove an entire tank at each speed. What were your results for 45-50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, and 80 mpg?

You got 23mpg @70mph but think 26mpg @45 is crazy? If so, nothing I can say will convince you otherwise. I've yet to get 20mpg @70mph, but I know it is possible since others here have said as much.

You don't actually need to drive an entire tank to get an accurate mpg number. The dash gives a pretty accurate figure. I've also use the Torque app. I've compared actual fuel used via gas pump, dash mpg, and Torque mpg to each other over several full to empty tanks. All agree to within a few percent. Keep in mind the gas pump itself isn't 100% accurate, different pumps will shut off at different levels. A .25 gallon diff. with 20 gallons is a 1% error. 0.50 gallons over 20 gallons is 2% error. How much variation do you get between pumps? Have you measured it?

Torque app, the dash, and the fuel pump agree (within reason) that I get ~19 mpg doing 70. The dash and torque agree I got 26mpg on some country roads doing 45. Which of these data points is wrong? Why would that be?

Some more actual experience:

Plus, probably the biggest variable -- wind.

Elevation changes, I would hope, would be obvious.

However, the engine is only turning ~1250rpm and using very little power (~15hp) when puttering at 45mph, so you end up in an inefficient spot on the BSFC map.

Nice, sentence, btw.

I brings into line the concepts I've lazily dabbled to understand about BSFC maps and engine rpm.

I have been getting 16.5 to 17.5 in the city (mix of highway and roads with traffic lights) in my 2014 Trail.

I just went on a 2,000 mile round trip from TX to TN and got 17 to 18 mpg on the highway most of the time (I did get as much as 20 a few tanks). I was doing 75-80 and there was a lot of wind. I am disappointed with the hwy mileage.

One thing that I think affected my mileage is that I changed the tires from the factory Bridgestone to the Michelin M&S2 when I got it, and my mileage seemed to drop about 1-2 mpg. The Michelins really stick to the road but I think that hurts the mileage some.

Lol! I did the same! Over the weekend made it a point to drive a decent distance on the highway. I'm at 13.2 hahaha

I'll use my first post to chime in here.

We bought a 2014 TE for my wife.

A couple of thoughts:

I'll start with the debate between JeremyB and dzuwel. I think 26mpg is very believable at that speed. Obviously, there are several factors that come into play, but I think that number is attainable. Most people with Tacomas claim to get 16-18 mpg, but I get 20.5 on a somewhat consistent basis. However, a large part of my commute each day is highway between 50 and 70 mph. Once I get above 70, my mileage drops to about 18.5. These numbers are based on a combination of Fuelly, an Ultra-Gauge and a calculator. When I'm cruising at 50, my ultragauge shows between 24 and 28 mpg (give or take with incline).

For everyone who stated that their first tank was around 12-14 mpg. Are you going by the miles driven on that tank divided by the amount of fuel that you replace, or are you simply going by the display in the dash? I ask because our TE said around 12.9 the first tank and slowly got up to around 14 for the second. If you press and hold the button on the right (I think it's the "Set" button with a down arrow) that will reset that monitor. Once I reset it, the number jumped up to almost 18 immediately. I'm not sure why, but when they are new, that number seems to be abnormally low. The only thing I can figure is that Toyota starts the engine and just lets it run for quite a while before they get shipped out. I don't have any proof of that, but that is about the only thing I can conclude for the very low number. I'd suggest resetting that display and driving a full tank of gas. Then let's see what those numbers are.

Oh, and I also traded the factory bridgestones in on some Nitto Terra Grapplers. I wanted the General Grabber AT2, but those were on backorder. The Nittos, according to the salesman, are 41lbs. each whereas the Bridgestones weigh 40 lbs. each. We're not going to be doing any hardcore off-roading, but we will be in situations where an AT makes more sense than a highway tire. As for that having an effect on mileage, I know that a heavier tire will hurt mpgs, but 1lb. wasn't significant enough to me. I have no idea what the rolling coefficient is for both tires.

No offense to anyone. I bought my 4runner, I love my 4runner, and I don't give a damn about the fuel millage.

Oh trust me.... I love mine and don't care either... but I always see people post these crazy high mpg numbers and cant figure out how this is possible

We bought our LE out of state with 7 miles on it and drove over 300 miles home. The display mileage was 20.? on the first tank of gas. We also drive to FL and back getting about the same mileage. Doing mostly city driving now and it's gone from 18.2 after a few tanks of gas down to 17.9 according to the display.

What grade gas is everyone putting in the tank?

First tank of gas i got 334 miles and filled up with 19 gallons equals to 17mpg i also put much heavier tires on duratracs E load stock size. Thats 80% city driving on our 14' TE. I can see hitting 20mpg or more on highway driving if we keep it under 70.

How many miles do you have on it now? My Tacoma got better gas mileage after 10k. I hope the 4Runner does the same.

We put 87 octane in both.

That's actually pretty good considering you have an E load tire. The last set of E load rated tires I saw were 10lbs. heavier than their C rated counterparts. That's 40 extra pounds that need to be turned, which will hurt your gas mileage worse than 40 extra pounds of cargo.

I know I drive a '12 but for what it's worth: I achieved 20mpg doing 75-80mph to Washington DC in the summer (800+ miles). Caught the I95 in Bangor, ME all the way to DC. Includes border crossing, Boston traffic, pit-stop at the the outlets, overnight stop, GW Bridge in NYC, and heavy traffic from the outer burbs of DC all the way in. Mostly flat drive and I have full-time 4WD.

Again, 75-80mph whenever I could.

I think theoretically you get the best mpg when you speed up enough to make the vehicle shift into its highest gear and then maintain lowish rpms.

Throwing in another data point: on a recent long trip I averaged to something like 16-18 mpg -- that was almost all highways, 70-80 mph, loaded truck with five people and luggage.

I see 20 MPG achievable at those speeds in the perfect conditions only. Which mean: warm temperatures, low-speed winds, and flat driving conditions. People should not take this as granted, as wintertime, hills and winds will lower the 20MPG figure to 18-17 mpg easily, or even worse.

Lots of things to consider here. Do you live in a hilly area? Before i swapped my wheels/tires i was getting up to 24hw and 19city, 21mpg combined. That was running on tire pressure at 45psi.

I had ZERO confidence in the tires however, and frankly the stance looked rediculous from all angles, specifically the rear (think muffintop). Now i avg18.5mpg hw, and 16 city. HOWEVER, when im doing 55mph my avg is 23mpg.... so if you arent doing a lot of stop/go i think you should see some decent numbers.

Also, keep your revs below 2500 and you'll do much better. No need to drag race between stop-lights, its a 4Runner, not a Ferrari, if people wanna pass you, let them.
