2014 Smart Key system

has anyone run into a situation when you walk by a 2013 or older gen with your smart key fob, they start beeping at you like it unlocked?

I walked past a 2013 and it did the same beep sequence as my 2014 when it unlocked.

then afterwards (about 1-2 seconds) it started making even more oddball beeps like it was confused.

Are you sure it's not just the owner of whatever vehicle you're walking past pressing the remote fob buttons? Did you even check if they have a smart key system, lol.

pretty sure since the guy is an officer that works in the basement of my building. signals don't get out of that basement since this building was built in the 60's.

the parking lot beginning row is like 300/500 feet away and the 4runner was 4 rows deep.

was gonna check after I got lunch from the BX, but it was gone. I will try to check after work today.

Was it wet out? Snow or ice on the door handles?

I've noticed that moisture on the touch sensitive areas of the Limited's door handles will cause it to think someone is touching it when a smart key is close enough.

EDIT: Just realized that you weren't talking about your OWN Limited. That's just odd.

Like a creep, lol. You would think that with all these newer rolling code technologies interference like that would be thing of the past. Hopefully it's just a glitch and makes it beep without actually unlocking, that would be real freaky!

This reminds me of back in the days when alarms were much more primitive...I think this was something like 10-15 years ago, I clicked my remote fob to unlock my car unlocked and I heard another one in the parking lot chirp too. I tested it again, and sure enough it was on the same frequency :lmao:

well its not hard to figure out. officers stand out like a sore thumb at my building, different uniform from the enlisted.

and they only work on one side of the building mostly in the basement.

I work on the maintenance side, most officers work on the ops side.

Oh haha nah I mean it's kind of creepy to be peering into other peoples cars so closely to check their keying system, lol. So did you get a chance to see if it did it again?

not yet, didn't want to roam the parking lot since its 20F and windy so it was around 5F wind chill.

only reason I walked past it yesterday was going to lunch and I passed it heading to mine. since I park in the last row in the 2nd lot, which is about as far away from the building you can get, I don't tend to walk in the parking lot very much.

and I haven't seen it today.

I was once standing in the paddock next to a Porsche I'd driven nine months prior. When my phone in my pocket rang, it also rang in the car — the old bluetooth connection found me! Was kinda weird.

I recall reading somewhere that the remote door key codes were numericaly so long that the chance of being able to unlock someone else's door was like 2 billion to one. Either he was messing you or you better buy a lotto ticket.
