2014 TEP - Noise from Steering Column?

Hi everyone,

I did some searches regarding the odd noise I'm hearing every time I start up my 14' TEP and drive forward a few yards and then hear a clicking/jingle noise from the steering column. But nothing came up that is similar to the noise I hear.

It happens every time I turn off the the truck and turn it back on and drive forward; doesn't happen in reverse. There is no vibration and I couldn't record the noise as the go pro kept picking up other noises.

A little bit more on the noise; it sounds sorta like if when your tires slip and you get that buzzing noise from the traction control...it kinda clicks/jingle's for a second and then stops.

Also, this first started happening when I reversed out of a parking spot and didn't come to a complete stop prior to putting it in drive and I got the traction control buzz and light....ever since then get that noise when first starting out.

Just curious if anyone else had a similar problem before I take to the dealership (ugh).

Mine does not do that, but I don't have KDSS for an exact comparison. Sorry.

One sidenote, I do know not completely stopping while backing up and shifting into drive will bite you over time. Not once or twice, but as a habit.

are any of your other systems on or engaged? What I mean is, is the 4Runner exactly as it was from the dealership? Meaning it's in 2H, Crawl control isn't on, etc...

VoodooTitan: Yes, I'm in 2H, crawl control and terrain select is off. Of note; when I was out wheelin yesterday and in 4H; it made the noise also after stopping and restarting; kinda sounds like something is clicking either in/or out of place...hard to explain. Thank you

What about trying to take it out, shift it into 4L, drive a few minutes. Shift into 4H, drive a few miles. Then shift back into 2H. See if that takes care of it...

Did the noise begin after you were out wheeling or before that?

The noise began before that; started about a week ago; but only intermittently at first and now it's every time I start the truck and drive about 15 yards and then it happens. I'll go ahead and try running it thru the 4L etc and see if that resolves it. Thank you for the suggestions; it's greatly appreciated.

Did you thoroughly inspect underneath to make sure you don't have a twig, limb, cat, or old person:faint2: hung under there or near the wheels and/or drive shafts?

I can verify that you are not hearing things. I have a '14 Trail w/ KDSS. When I put the vehicle in drive and roll forward a few feet (not sure if distance or speed dependent), then I hear a noise. The noise reminds me of a parking brake / transmission lock-out noise but slightly louder. I suspect that the noise is either from the KDSS system 'energizing' or a brake booster system (anti-roll back). These are both guesses so don't put any faith into the above statement. I only hear it during this start sequence and for the rest of the ride it doesn't show up. I've had this rig for less than a month and I'm A-okay with the little system noises it makes. Ever hear the pumps going when you're on an airplane? That should get you worried!

Could be due to the KDSS, there's a lot of electrical systems that energize when you turn the vehicle on. A lot of 4th gen owners new and used, still ask about buzzing noises they hear; many owners are unfamiliar with the hydraulically assisted system that is used in the 120 & 150 platform vehicles. This could be something to do with the KDSS being energized/tested on start-up; I haven't had too many KDSS equipped 4Runners come through the dealership, but if we get one I'll try to remember to listen for this sound.

My 2011 has been doing that for three years so it's nothing to worry about. I doubt it's KDSS though as there's nothing to energize in the system - it's a passive hydraulic system.

Thanks everyone for the responses it's greatly appreciated! Ya, I'm thinking it's something with the start-up sequence/energizing etc . I'm not going to worry about it and if anything gets worse will pop it in to the dealership.

Just saw this thread - Pretty sure it's the ECU energizing the ABS and going through a test sequence for proper operation. Mine does it and that is all I can ascertain. It does not do it all the time because I think it tests on a "schedule" more than every time you start the engine.
