2015 hood flex help!!

And once again. Old cars are not heavier than new cars. Feeling sturdy is not the same as being sturdy. Take that "tank" and get into a head on accident and see how you feel after. Guarantee that sturdiness isn't what you thought it was.

It did have a V8.

A debate between two people when one is anonymous. I tend to lean towards the statements of one that I have read their replies for a few years often good thoughtful responses, as opposed to one that well just reads between the lines. Just sayin'

but yeah my hood doesn't flex that much

Oh boy you got a thumbs up from an engineer. You must have me backed into a corner. Just because you have read his comments doesn't show he knows what he's talking about.
He's just being nostalgic. He probably thinks a posi is better than a limited slip.

newer cars survive accident
older heavier sheetmetal is irrelevant in an accident as shown buy newer cars being safe
old heavy bumpers are irrelevant as evidence of new cars being safe

I admit I didn't read every word of every post, but it seems you are both arguing the same side of the point and misreading/understanding each other (or maybe just one of you).

I read both of you as saying:

New cars are structurally stronger, where it matters, and much safer than old cars.

Do either of you disagree with that?

Bothe my 2010 and my 2015 have the hood flex at highway speeds. Bothers me because it's very distracting.

BWI can be a bit long winded and might get off track a bit (ADHD? I'm the same way; meds and beer help, mostly), but he understands automotive engineering and design more than pretty much everyone on this forum (his 4th gen bias, not withstanding)
 
I noticed it on the ride home from the dealership, but it didn't bother me much since then. Keep your eyes on the road ;)

Not at all (well maybe on the ADHD part, it's more the Asperger's :madgrin:)

Because in this discussion we're talking about hood flexing under wind pressure at speed (i.e. driving fast on the freeway) and why typically hoods are thinner/flappier in newer cars than they were in older cars. I made the comment about them being notched for impacts and thinner as a possible safety measure for pedestrians being thrown on the hood (also why there is a mandated space between hood and engine) because the OP mentioned it in his original post. But the point was that in older vehicles they were thicker and sturdier than in newer vehicles and I hear this "floppy hood" complaint a lot and was trying to shed light on why that is.

Dynamat (fatmat, peel and seal, whatever your preference) applied to the bottom of the hood, and/or vinyl wrap, will lower the resonant frequency of the hood. It never bothered me that much, but after vinyl wrapping to reduce glare I noticed the hood bounced a lot less. I added some peel and seal as I had leftovers and figured, "why not?" Which also reduced vibration.
 
That sounds like something I wouldn't want to watch, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Back to hoods: What causes the flexing? Wind right? Anyone thought to check the hood latch adjustment and hood stops on each side to make sure everything is tight? There is a seal up front and if wind is getting under it that could be the cause. Everyone wants to blame the sheet metal but in reality if everything is set up right you shouldn't have problems. I had to adjust my stops because when closed you could still push a corner of the hood down a bit. Thoughts?
 
Man, if a flapping hood bothers you, don't ever install an aftermarket bumper with hoops you can see from the driver's seat. They'd have to commit you, haha

That's a thought. Though would it be that much more air considering there's a relatively slower stream of air in the engine bay itself (slowed down going through the radiator and being pushed around and under the engine), so that could still cause pressure differences between the top and bottom of the hood to bounce up and down on its center portion?
