Understood. My point, and the point of my first post is that my car has reached the point where it is considered unsafe and actually recalled, but Toyota Corporate told me by phone it is still safe (contrary to what they and Takata reported to the NHTSA), but will not provide me anything in writing that the passenger seat defect will not be dangerous until May of 2018 (which is what they told me by phone).
Contrary to the information provided in the remedy notice/recall, Toyota will not provide me with a rental.

All of the 2015 4runners have the faulty airbag. You will eventually be recalled. For now the NHTSA is allowing the bags to be recalled over time to prioritize those that are the most dangerous.
Doesn't mean you don't have a bad airbag now, it just means there aren't enough replacements available yet, so you have to wait.
And for those of us that actually are recalled, well there is still no remedy in sight.

Fair enough. I misread the data on testing and so deleted my initial comment, but not sure I agree on the 99.2%, but they're still small numbers. I'd like to see Takata results that are age and environmentally biased/weighted, and I'm not sure those numbers are quite transparent (and certainly not conclusive).
But the scope of the recalls is massive, and some high-risk cars are still not remedied (see my post earlier), and most importantly I have a sample size n=1.

Yeah, the dealer offered me a rental through Enterprise when I first took it in, and I inquired if it was possible to get a car that seats six (my 4R seats 7) so I can load my whole family. Corporate said no rental at all.

Yeah. What people don't realize is there are a lot of vehicles out there who need airbags replaced. They are doing it orderly over time.
My post was just to show that the odds of all that happening are slim. Could it happen? Sure. Someone out there gets struck by lightning or wins the lottery or dies falling off the couch. Just putting it in perspective.
If people REALLY were concerned with crash safety they would question crash test procedures and ratings because they are really misleading. For example, I don't care how many good airbags you have in a Yaris because when you hit that Surburban something's going to give, and it will be the Yaris.

Actually, got that backwards:
The passenger airbag recall was 5/2016 and the remedy is available
But the driver airbag recall was 2/2016 and the remedy remains unavailable
And this is on an 07 Honda in a humid environment. Certainly Toyota could handle the recall differently, but I assume the manufacturers, Takata, and NHTSA all have some say in which vehicles get preference for these in-demand parts.
So... back to the first comment: don't hold your breath. (And, agreed--new cars shouldn't be an issue).

Fair enough--most forum members have a higher risk of suffering from heart disease, or worse ED, related event this year than an airbag recall related injury.

Sure, but Toyota didn't make a profit off the lightning, the lottery or the couch.
They sure don't appear to be in any hurry to get their defective products fixed. :shrug:

Think for a minute man. Toyota is not calling the shots. NHTSA (our government) is with regards to the recall. I'm sure Toyota would rather get twenty million airbags shipped to their dealer, have them install them in a few months and move on. Unfortunately common sense and logic say Takata cannot build them that fast, dealers cannot install them that fast, and then there's this little issue of many other manufacturers who need new airbags too. This is a big AUTOMOTIVE issue, not just a TOYOTA issue.

Toyota has the option to use other airbag manufacturers. They just want Takata to pay for for the correction, and we are the ones that take the risk.

Yep. I received a notice for my '11 3 Series in March of last year but parts are still not available.
I just checked and you are correct, the 2017's are fixed and have the updated airbags. The early 2017 Lexus GX was affected.

We actually test drove a 16 GX 460, and then found out they had the same damn airbag problem, and the early 17s GX did too. Scratched that off our list and ended up getting a LC 200 instead.
We are seriously considering upgrading to a 17 4R. I know the risk is small, but from my standpoint, if something did happen to my wife (or material shot to the back seat and injured one of my kids) I know I would always blame myself as I knew of the potential risk. I purposefully buy larger vehicles for safety for the same reason. A Corolla is a lot cheaper, but won't want to take a 5-6k pound SUV on.
Truly, I just expected more from Toyota. I understand the restraint due to capacity of replacements, but once I actually got to the airbag recall stage, I figured I'd get a rental at least, similar to what other members have reported, with a fix in sight. Instead I get crapped on and told there is no ETA when my recalled car will be fixed.
To have Toyota tell me that my airbag is still safe, even though my 4R is recalled is ridiculous, especially because Toyota refuses to tell me that in writing. I just feel like they want to limit their rental cost. After the ****ing shitload of Toyota vehicles I have purchased, I would expect better. The sad thing is I'm still considering buying another Toyota as I just don't like the other options out there
