2016 4Runner getting recalled for Takata airbags...

They haven't been recalled yet. The notice is in anticipation of a future recall. Apparently it's safe...until it isn't.

Toyota dealers are being instructed to disclose this information to potential buyers. Wonder how you're supposed to work that into your sales pitch...

for the buyer a way to negotiate a lower price.

Defective airbags have killed people, and continue to be sold in vehicles - but VW had to issue a stop sale on cars that pollute too much. WTF NHTSA?

How is this even remotely legal? If I bought a new car with known faulty airbags, that would be a hell of a lawsuit I would think. This goes to show that manufactures have placed a monetary value on loss of life and it is lower than not selling vehicles until safe airbags are available.

I did a paper in school on this. Several manufactures knew about potentially fatal design errors in their vehicles, but determined that it would be cheaper to pay out on lawsuits for deaths, than to recall the vehicles and fix them.

None of our 15-16 vehicles will show up on the Vin tracker for recall as they were just added and will not be recalled until 2018 when they have new bags. The issue has to do with time and deterioration because a drying agent was not used so they're using faulty airbags in new cars in anticipation that they will hold together for a few years until they can build new safe ones and then replace ours.

2010-2011, 2015-2016 4Runner. Link in the press release to check your VIN for recalls, otherwise will get mailed a letter.

Interestingly, mine is a MY2011, not on the recall list though....

Where do you see 2015? The link you posted mentions nothing about this year. I put my 2015 vin in the Toyota checker and it stated no recalls.

Does anybody happen to know the "newest" vehicle that has been responsible for an injury or fatality? I guess what I'm asking is does it make sense or is it acceptable for the 2015-16's to not be under recall yet since the failures are age-related?

What about shutting off airbags until the replacement parts arrive?
Right now only Toyota is recommending this course of action. Consumer Reports has concerns about the recommendation from a safety standpoint.

My guess is that Toyota has to use the future recall airbags in current production because nothing else is currently available that will fit into the dash space as designed. I doubt Toyota is happy about this, but the alternative is to just not produce the vehicles.

My 2010 TE is on the list to be recalled as soon as parts are available.

Bingo! That's exactly the situation. It's not just Toyota, either.

This is the problem with having one supplier that has basically cornered the market for a specific item. Especially when the fault is something that takes several years to become known -- by then there are millions of vehicles that have the bad part.

To be clear...(from what I read) the 2016.. trucks being sold are not yet recalled for this issue. It will be recalled as time passes, since they know the problem is related to degradation over time. That is why they are allowed to sell the trucks with a known issues (it is a future known issue, not current). Still seems a bit of a slippery slope....

What sucks is they don't currently have a remedy... Hope that get it figure out soon. My VIN says it is recalled. Not too worried though...

IT's clean because it is not old enough, yet. It still has the faulty airbags. It will eventually be recalled.

I think it is just the 2010, 2011, maybe (2012) so far. Pretty sure they all have the same type of propellant.

The hassle sucks, but I would not worry about it too much..

I mean they say it'll take a few years but what if you're always driving with the windows down in the rain or splashing through puddles all the time. How do they know what does or doesn't accelerate the issues?...This is ridiculous...
