2016 4Runner getting recalled for Takata airbags...

Class action lawsuit ? Anyone ?

I'm sure somewhere there is a law firm looking at this. My guess would be trying to claim that owners who purchased a 4Runner after Toyota knew that it was continuing to use a potentially faulty airbag and before they acknowledged it publicly (the other day) were subsequently hurt by a decrease in resale value after Toyota made it public.

I believe that was one of the reasons cited for the unattended acceleration class action lawsuit that Toyota settled (diminished value).

IT's clean because it is not old enough, yet. It still has the faulty airbags. It will eventually be recalled.

I think it is just the 2010, 2011, maybe (2012) so far. Pretty sure they all have the same type of propellant.

The hassle sucks, but I would not worry about it too much..

It would seem car mfgs. are being allowed to install new bags that are not as likely to throw schrapnel.

I like [MENTION=139396]darenwelsh[/MENTION] idea, but rather than pull the bag, disable the circuitry to that bag if possible; else pull the bag. I'll take my chances with just a seat belt.

Others can have the Takata Claymore if they so choose.

I think you doing what I said not to do (freaking out) LOL. The information is confusing, but this is a new recall and a different level of concern. Again, Toyota is not selling cars that have an active safety recall. It will be active over time depending on where the vehicle is sold/located...

If you live in the most affected zone (gulf coast...) Time in service until significant propellant degradation may occur is projected at between 6-9 years. So a 2016 will be a concern in 2022. If you were in zone C (north west) it would be 15 years - 2030.

As of right now, only 2010-2011 5th gens in zone A are of any concern. What sucks for us who are in this boat is that there is no replacement part available at this time. However, it is just the passenger side and I think the risk is low enough to keep my passenger airbag connected at this time. Hope parts become available soon.

Even if studies provide data showing the failure mode won't happen until after x amount of time, the fact remains that they are shipping vehicles with airbags that add a known safety risk. As an individual whose passengers are not just another number in a report, I'd prefer to have a choice on whether I accept this risk trade.

If the inflator housing ruptures in a crash, metal shards from the airbag can be sprayed throughout the passenger cabin—a potentially disastrous outcome from a supposedly life-saving device.

Received my Important Safety Recall (Interim Notice) today. Im Zone A since my T4R was purchased in HI. I spoke with my dealership and the remedy is not yet available. Apparently we will received a second notice and that is when the remedy is available and you get the repair.

Warning, the notice states:

"Until the remedy becomes available, we recommend that you do not operate the vehicle with an occupant in the front passenger seat."

The notice only lists the 2010-2011 4Runner

I live in a southern state and my 2005 truck has been down here since I bought it. Been getting recall notices for at least the past two years. I just did my air bag recall at 11 years.
Same kind of truck but my father's 2002 was not affected by this recall.

But it's statistically insignificant that they are a hazard right now, meaning you could probably worry way more about someone kicking up a 2x4 on the road in front of you on the highway.

Another way to think about it is that the brakes on a large airplane are also a safety hazard at some time in the future, but they get replaced before they become hazardous. It's similar with the airbag. I'm not happy about it, but I'm not worried, either.

I wouldn't worry if new vehicle. Looking at the pictures of failed inflators, they are corroded which seems to increase the chance of the can shattering. Everything in life has risk, I'll take my chances and be glad there is an airbag at all. I drove vehicles that didn't have airbags for years and never worried.

Anyone else waiting on AIRBAGS?

I've had a rental since July and the dealership has no ETA on my passenger side airbag (2011 SR5). Anyone else waiting on airbags for this damn recall?! I had to sell my Harley around the same time I had the recall, and now I've been itching to go to the beach or do some off-roading with my wife. I sure as hell can't do any off-roading in the Sienna they gave me as a rental, or my wife's Maxima...

Since you have an airbag that could possibly kill you and it is declared unsafe to let a passenger ride in the passenger seat, why can't they just unplug the passenger airbag module and slap a sticker on the dash that warns there is no functional airbag? How the OEMs are handling this whole thing is stupid. We drove vehicles for decades that only had seat belts but now, for some reason, Toyota can't authorize disabling the bomb to make the vehicle usable. Right now the vehicle is considered dangerous. Unplug the airbag and it's still pretty safe. Idiots!

The airbag recall for my wife's 2012 Mustang took like a year before they had parts ready to replace it once the vehicle got put on the recall list. They didn't hold her car though. Is this the same here for the Takata airbag? They're having to replace millions of parts so I'm assuming it takes a long time before the parts are ready for a particular vehicle depending on how they fall into the schedule or something.

I can't fathom how that company could stay in business after all this.
