2016 4Runner getting recalled for Takata airbags...

Since you have an airbag that could possibly kill you and it is declared unsafe to let a passenger ride in the passenger seat, why can't they just unplug the passenger airbag module and slap a sticker on the dash that warns there is no functional airbag? How the OEMs are handling this whole thing is stupid. We drove vehicles for decades that only had seat belts but now, for some reason, Toyota can't authorize disabling the bomb to make the vehicle usable. Right now the vehicle is considered dangerous. Unplug the airbag and it's still pretty safe. Idiots!

Unplugging the airbag means the entire SRS system is no longer functional due to safety measures.

That seems ridiculous.. So basically Toyota is selling cars they have no parts for.

I would be so pissed... They need to start servicing existing customers vs building and selling cars with defective airbags. Last I heard they are still putting the time bombs in the new ones... Mine is about to hit the recall timeframe soon. They better come up with a solution soon or all the 4 runner owners are going to be SOL.

Lol, I'm still waiting on steering parts for my '07 Ram.....and airbag. :bolt:

Don't hold your breath men!

Shit, I just realized mine is recalled. I think most of us don't know.... The info is so confusing.... Don't laugh to hard Vinisil you probably have the same defective airbag. They put the same thing in most of the 16s. It's got a 6-20 year lifetime depending on climate. All will be in recall by 2019.

Details (although confusing) here https://techinfo.toyota.com/techInf...echinfo/html/prelogin/docs/cp/g1pg1rtofaq.pdf

The 4Runner is the only model they continued to equip with the defective airbags in MY 2016.

The thing that sucks is these trucks are not worth anything with a defective airbag. And we all only have a few more years until they are considered recalled with no remedy. Toyota better get off their asses

I love how they state this.
Remember, this condition does not cause the front Passenger airbag to activate when it should not. To
minimize risk, Toyota recommends that no passengers sit in the front passenger seat. If this recommendation
is not feasible for the customer’s personal or business needs, alternative transportation may be made
available.

Yea, no big deal. Just don't ever have a passenger. in the car and have an accident because the shrapnel could kill them. I'm surprised more people are not upset about this. I guess they have kept it pretty quiet...

The big question I have is are they still putting defective airbags in models being produced now... or did they choose to use the revised parts to sell new vehicles and force existing customers to risk it or not carry passengers. Both are bad, but I think using the remedy for profit when there is known safety concerns in the field is borderline negligence.

Hopefully, they will do the right thing and get parts out soon. I know some will say it is not their fault... but they need to take responsibility for the parts they put in the car.

I'm not laughing at it.. Just pointed out, I have a truck with defective and recalled parts (including airbags) that hasn't had parts come to the dealer in almost two years. Thanks FCA but you can be upset and pissed all you want. It won't change anything.

As long as the manufacturer is abiding by the terms of the recall....nothing you can do.

Hell my truck was made 6 months too early to qualify for the buy back FCA agreed too. Not that I had any issues but I'm stuck with it...sitting on defective TRE's and airbags. Such is life.

That stinks. One of my friends had FCA buy back his Power Wagon. He left the dealership, drove to the airport, flew to Indiana, and bought a Tacoma TRD Off-Road to drive home to Texas.

Apparently it is difficult to get the 6-speed manual in San Antonio... where they are built...

I'm not really pissed... Just calling out Toyota for being.... well, kind of shitty.

You are right, not much we can do besides all go get rentals on Toyota's dime to put a little more pressure on..... Sadly, unless they feel some financial pressure they are probably going to move at a snails pace to remedy existing customers.

Personally, this is the first vehicle I have owned that has had an active safety recall with no available remedy. Seems unusual to me, but then again I have never owned a Dodge product. LOL

Yeah it is shitty and I'm not happy about it. Off road rentals for everyone!:hat:

Believe me...if I didn't have a truck camper and didn't need to tow a 5500 lbs boat...I wouldn't own a dodge product (or Ford or GM for that matter) either.

I will say my truck has been great. :pop2:

Yeah, it totally sucks not being able to drive with my wife in the truck. I've been having withdrawals, because we used to ride on my Harley together. Only up-side is that I'm not putting a bunch of miles on my 4runner, and I've been ragging the crap out of the rentals.

Also sucks because they gave me a Camry as a rental starting off, and I asked for a larger vehicle for Thanksgiving when we went to my parents house. They gave me a Sienna (apparently for the recall, any rentals HAVE to be Toyota products), and they said that I can only exchange the rental once. So... I'm stuck with the soccer mom van until God knows when...

Anyone else waiting on AIRBAGS?

Unplugging the airbag means the entire SRS system is no longer functional due to safety measures.

But how hard is it to take a connector an put a 2 Ohm resistor (or whatever impedance these igniters present to the circuit) and plug that in place of the passenger airbag? The system sees the load is present and everything works fine.

Is the issue that shrapnel might fly out and harm/kill the passenger (as some have stated on this thread), or that the lack of a desiccant allows the propellant to absorb moisture and become ineffective at deploying properly (after a period of time)?

I did not think my T4R was on the list - but do see that 2013's in Texas are due for recall in 2018. Makes me think the recall timeline factor is influenced by the duration needed for the moisture content to become detrimental to effective airbag deployment?

OP has an '11 SR5. I have a '12 SR5 but my vin doesn't show any recall for the airbag or anything else. Did I escape this recall fiasco or is this bogus? Or does it hit next year maybe? And is it only Passenger side? That's weird if so.

Yours will probably be recalled next year. They're doing it by years. Supposedly the substance takes 6 years to degrade and turn into buckshot, and is only in the passenger side airbag. So, if you get into an accident and someone is riding shotgun, they're likely to take a buckshot to the face if the airbag deploys.

The issue is the propellant absorbs moisture and becomes unstable. So instead of burning at the desired rate it instead blows up, rupturing the vessel and creating shrapnel. In a sense it becomes a pipe bomb.

On the 4Runners, the recall is only the passenger side. The driver side is a different design disc type inflator that apparently isn't affected by this. The recall includes driver side inflator on some other makes and models of vehicles.

I have a '12. According to the chart in the TSB, you and I are in zone C (assuming you are still in OR?). We are lowest priority due to a slower deterioration rate. Our recall is scheduled for Jan 2019. I doubt any of us gen 5.0's dodged the recall at this point. The good news is that you are not yet in the danger zone (according to the TSB and NHTSA). Not something I would worry about too much. Flying shrapnel from an airbag is still one of the least deadly things currently on the roads. Hopefully by 2019, this will be sorted and our recall will go smoothly.

Not sure...

But then your modifying a safety system with an unapproved repair (I doubt Toyota or even the NHTSA would be okay with that).

Manufacturers don't like to mess around when it comes to safety systems. For example unless Toyota specifies otherwise any damage to SRS wiring requires replacement of the corresponding wiring harness. (i.e. rodent nibbles the insulation on an airbag wire? The entire harness that has that wire needs to be replaced, I'd imagine not a lot of independent shops would even think of repairing it due to liability. )

Every firth gen (besides maybe a few 16s have the defective airbags.. I'm guessing 99 - 100% of the people on here are under the recall now or will have it tagged to their VIN by 2019. But by then.. they should have a remedy available.

As stated.. the recalls are based on exposure to heat and humidity. If they still don't have a fix in another year or so... things will start to get a bit concerning. I sure hope nobody gets seriously injured by these bags. I know people are out driving with them now. I'm guessing there is a good margin of error built into the recall time frame. Might need passengers to sign a release form
