2016 4Runner getting recalled for Takata airbags...

It seems clear to me. The 2017 4runner airbags do not have the desiccant in them. The 2016 4runner models do.
The last paragraph in the link below says that the 2016 model 4runner vehicles use the desiccant. These will get bad over time and will be recalled.

I am going to look at a 2017 4runner today. I do not think I want to deal with the recall years from now. That will just be a pain in the ass.

From your link, as of their 9/2/16 update...

"Models that may be in dealer inventory at this time equipped with Takata frontal PSAN air bag inflators without desiccant are:
2015 model year Lexus IS 250C/350C
2015 model year Scion xB
2015 and 2016 model years Lexus GX 460
2015 and 2016 model years Toyota 4Runner
2017 model year Lexus GX 460
Note, these are all frontal passenger air bag inflators."


All I know is that I purchased an 8/16 build Trail Premium the end of November and when I entered the VIN on Toyota's site it said I'm on the to-be-recalled-when-they-see-fit-to-get-around-to-it list.

Some days I don't believe Toyota knows what it's doing.

Appreciate the links to the recall information. Just bought a new 2016 in January. Date of manufacture was 11/2016. Checked recalls by VIN on toyota.com/recall. Listed no recalls, because the passenger airbag on my vehicle has not yet been recalled. Instead a search by make/model/year and location shows that a recall for the airbag is planned for ~January 2019. Reading through the article it looks like, as of today, that the issue occurs over a period of time in high humidty and temp. They've prioritized vehicle recalls for those that meet the time limit and climate. Apparently I have about 3 years before my passenger (because I'm greedy and won't let anyone else drive) might not benefit from having the airbag deploy in case of an accident.

I suspect that 1) the airbag manufacturing process can't keep up with the demand for new vehicles plus all the vehicles already sold with the faulty airbags, and 2) Toyota is hedging their bets that its cheaper to settle with the insurance companies on vehicles that don't have a recall yet in the case of an accident and non-deployment than to figure out how to increase manufacturing.

Annoyed that I wasn't informed of the imminent recall by the dealership before I purchased, as the Toyota website states is the policy. Would I have bought a 2017 instead. Probably, after doing more research.

Can you point me to where that policy is stated on the Toyota site? I'm in the same boat as you and definitely would have waited for a '17.

I got a 2016 TE in dec. The dealer did not tell me directly about the recall, but I do remember signing a paper about recalls and I thought "was is this about" but I did not ask. Now I know why after reading this thread. It still does not bother me, it will get fixed. But it is all about your risk tolerance and I do not depend on an airbag. I am more worried about other stuff than this. I will say that if everyone drove like they rode a motorcycle we would have no problems on the rode.

The problem is not that the passenger airbag would not deploy in an accident, it is that it will deploy in an explosive manner that results in metal parts shooting out killing the passenger.

I looked on Toyota Canada website and by entering my VIN, they doesn't advise of any recall ... I tought the canadian T4R was the same as american.

If you read the details on Toyota canada id say we are safe for 15-20 years. They currently haven't recalled any 4runners in Canada. I'm nit too concerned.

And that is likely because you don't have high temps / humidity very often which accelerates the degrading process. First recalls are for areas with that type of climate.

Ya they have a map of USA on Toyota Canada's website showing 3 sections of high, med, low priority. Canada didn't even make the map, but I'd say we're the same as northern USA.

Just checked my 2016 at https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls and mine shows no recall. And I am definitely in a hot & humid part of the country. Will a recall appear at some point??

Maybe, maybe not.

My 2016, purchased in Oct 2015 has the problem but is not under recall yet as it is located in VA and has not reached the age where the bag could be a problem. Latest info is parts for it could be available sometime in 2019. On the other hand my wife's 2008 Lexus is under recall but parts supposedly will not be available until end of June 2017.

There is info on this for all makes/models buried in this thread a ways back.

Interestingly, mine is a MY2011, not on the recall list though....

The recall eventually impacts all 5th gens up until a certain point in 2016. It won't show an open recall for a 2016 yet. You won't know until you vehicle is old enough.... (currently phase scheduled for a 2016 is 2019/2020... phase 4)

So far, nobody has had their airbag replaced as far as I know. The document says June for 2010s in Zone A.. but this has been going on for a long time....with no remedy and many vehicles in active safety recall state for over a year.... Some people have been given rentals, others have been told to just deal with it...

2011 4R airbags

I received my notice about my passenger side air bag last year. I called Toyota on May 18th 2017. The woman told me I was due for replacement this September. Because of the geographical area (So Cal) we live in and the year of the 4Runner (2011) we are at a higher risk for airbag failure and will be first to receive the replacements. Has anybody had the bags replaced Yet?

My sister has a Honda CVR, she was told not to drive it because of the air bags. Honda gave her a loaner car which was also recalled within a month. They finally rented her a Chevy. Now that they are paying for a rental car from Avis. Her CRV was fixed the next week. Funny how that worked out.

I have a 2010 with open recall for a year. Was told to pound sand on a rental that would be able to town my small trailer, but they did offer to give me a minivan.

For those that posted that have no open recalls does not necessarily mean that your vehicle will be recalled. Check this site at the bottom of the page to see if your vehicle will be recalled in the future.
