2016 4Runner getting recalled for Takata airbags...

They haven't been recalled yet. The notice is in anticipation of a future recall. Apparently it's safe...until it isn't.

Toyota dealers are being instructed to disclose this information to potential buyers. Wonder how you're supposed to work that into your sales pitch...

Yeah wish I knew all this before the dealership sold me mine. I could have gotten a better deal. lol

I saw today where Takata has filed for bankruptcy.

Wonder how that might affect the projected replacement schedule.

Well, I have a "later" 2016 TE and it is included in the recall (I ordered mine and tracked it on the cargo vessel to Oregon when it arrived near the end of July, 2016).

I'm hoping Toyota just finds a different vendor and works out the rest of the issues with Takata's bankruptcy filing later.

Question for you. How do you know it is eventually included in the recall and what is your mfg date (on inside of driver door).

The good news is you have plenty of time before it is anything to be concerned with. Hopefully they will have a fix by then, us with older trucks are pretty much SOL unless they come up with parts.

When I bought my 2016 runner in sep/16 the dealership made me sign a paper saying something along the lines of: you are aware that there might or might not be a recall on your airbags and if so, Toyota won't be liable if anything happens. As far as I remember I refused to sign that sheet but it was either you sign it, or you can't take the vehicle.

Oh well... I'm happy with my 4runner :lookout:

Some 2016 model year 4Runner vehicles have been manufactured with an airbag that is not affected by this Safety Recall condition and will not be included in a future phase. If your vehicle is affected, a Takata Airbag Inflator Safety Recall may be issued in approximately January 2019 and you will be notified when the recall has been issued. Please update your owner information for Toyota/Scion or Lexus so that we have your current contact information.

My Runner was made in Aug. 2016 so we shall see what happens..

Saw a news blip earlier today saying a dozen or so people had died so far due to the malfunctioning airbags. They listed the vehicles and no 4 runners or even Toyotas were mentioned. Mostly all Honda Acords and some overseas. One guy was a 82 year old man in Florida that was banging on his dash with a hammer when it deployed. So I guess that wasn't a good idea. But no 4runners being mentioned makes me feel a little less uneasy.

I got my first 4Runner. A new '16 & was so excited. This news takes the wind out of my sails. The airbag issue was never disclosed. I called Toyota and they act like they don't know anything.

Last I read I thought the 2016 were not on the list. Only the 2015 models. You can go to this website and double check if your 4Runner is on the list to be recalled for anything: https://www.toyota.com/recall

Been covered on this thread in detail. Most 2016 models will be recalled. The ones produced in late 2016 got the updated air bag. The only way to know if it will be recalled is for a dealer to lookup the VIN.

Looking up current recalls in that link will only show something for 2010,2011 in zone A. It is a phased recall, 2016 will be the last ones replaced.

I think we determined September 2016+ production dates got the revised one...but best to check. You have a few years either way.

I want to know how it works if I bring it up to them that they sold me a vehicle they knew would potential cause harm to me. Would they let me trade it in?

HIGHLY doubtful. Also, if you bought the vehicle after the recall was publicized, they were supposed to have had you sign a waiver stating that you are aware that the vehicle will be eventually recalled.

Hello

It was interesting to hear about such a campaign, but I thought the issue was solved for a long time.
There are no such campaigns with us.
If something great breaks, the dealer can call you, but for such small things nobody gives talk.
And if the car is still in the warranty then we forget about the campaigns.
Can one of you ask when he goes to his dealer to ask what is happening with cars that have a campaign but are in Europe.
I will give you vin if needed

Auto Airbag Settlement Notifaction

This evening I received a letter/notification from the Auto Airbag Settlement Notice Administrator (www.AutoAirbagSettlement.com). It says that "Current and former owners and lessees of certain Toyota, Lexus, Scion or Pontiac Vibe vehicles with a Takata airbag may be entitled to a payment from a class action settlement." The settlement amounts to $278.5M and I have till Monday, September 25, 2017 to exclude myself and not be legally bound by the Settlement. First physical notification I received relating to this recall. That is good in the sense that my 2016 TE hasn't been recalled...yet.
