2016 4Runner getting recalled for Takata airbags...

Air Bag Replaced

I just got my Notice to schedule the air bag replacement at my local dealer. The notice says it should take about 1-1/2hrs. I will keep you informed of the progress.

Toyota just replaced my passenger side airbag. In my 2011 SR5. Dropped the truck off at 7:30am they provided me with an Uber driver (round trip) they called back at 12:00 sent Uber to pick me up. The process was painless.
Thanks to Hamer Toyota in Mission hills Ca. They made an inconvenience
quite pleasant.
Note: My 4runner is a 2011 from Southern California. Toyota is fixing the older models first as they are at higher risk of airbag failure. Depending on what temperate zone you live in.

I am screwed already

I have 2016 June 4runner. I got like 3 letters about the recall.
First one from Auto Airbag Settlement
The last 2 from TK Holdings.
I checked my recall status on both websites
https://www.toyota.com/recall
https://www.autoairbagsettlement.com/en/CheckVIN

Toyota website says there is no recall due. The 2nd website says it is.
I also called Toyota about it since I shipped my 4runner overseas and they said the warrant does not cover my airbag nor any fixing. There is official toyota dealer 2 hours away in a different country (Kazakhstan). Toyota said i have to pay with my own money to get it fixed there since the warranty is US only. I do not know even know if toyota dealer there would do Takata airbag fix for US model Toyota. I wont be back in the US for another 6 years.
Pray for me that i wont get into accident to have Takata shrapnels spray all over my face.

I have a 2010 Trail so I was affected. I just didn't think the risk was high enough to worry about injury to a front seat passenger. The "don't let anyone sit in the front passenger seat" notice was a comprehensive attempt to minimize liability for injuries. The actual incidence of injuries was vanishingly small, so I didn't worry about it on the few occasions when someone rode in the front passenger seat

Having grown up in the era of no seat belts, much less air bags, no baby seats, no bike helmets, no skating knee pads, drinking from a hose, etc; I'm with ya on this.

The incidents happen more often than you would think, and turn low speed non-serious accidents into serious injury events. I listed a bunch of court cases in a post on here sometime in the last year. When you realize the number of these incidents that make it to court, and add in the number of private settlements with Non-Disclosure Agreements, it is pretty pervasive. And the thing I noticed was the number of schrapnel cases where the bags were newer and in non-humid zones. The whole "your bag is safe until x date is comical." It is based on the lack of supply due to the large recall and the MORE dangerous bags get replaced first. But don't kid yourself that those not yet eligible for recall are "safe".

I finally had my bag replaced today. Thankfully I purchased in NorCal, which is supposedly humid so my 12 qualified now.

Why? Because you got a recall?

Auto manufacturers buy components from tons of different companies, and they expect the quality of those components to be up to their standards. But sometimes that doesn't happen. It's just part of manufacturing.

Unfortunately this products defect can hurt people. But you can't hold Toyota responsible. I mean just look at how many other manufacturers used Takata airbags too. You could have been saying the same thing if you bought a Honda, or a Subaru, etc.

Since Toyota is a company that brands itself on safety, I would have expected them to disclose the airbag issues prior to selling a new one with an issue Toyota would have been fully aware of.

HIGHLY doubtful. Also, if you bought the vehicle after the recall was publicized, they were supposed to have had you sign a waiver stating that you are aware that the vehicle will be eventually recalled.

It was not disclosed and no waiver was presented or signed.
I asked the dealer to do a VIN look up at the last service appointment. They said "good news, there are no open recalls on your 4runner". When I explained that I understood what open recall means, they told me that if I wanted to be safe, I should not have a passenger ride in my front seat. They also said once it was officially recalled, they could provide a rental.
I spoke to a manager about trading for a '17. He was happy to but did let me know that the '17's could become an issue too.
He said he would have service print out the details on the airbags in my vehicle. By the time I got back to service, they said the network was down & they would mail it to me. That was 3 weeks ago and I can not get a return call.

Sounds sketchy. It was my understanding that 17's weren't affected by this, due to the use of new airbag inflators that don't have this issue. Also, on the rental, be prepared to get a corolla or a camry...

Navigation issues after warranty airbag replacement

I wonder if any of you have heard of this issue. After having the recalled airbag replaced in my '11 Limited I noticed that I could not enter the service into the maintenance area on the nav/radio because it kept saying that "the date you've entered is in the past, please change date". I didn't have time to mess with it right away so I just brushed it off. About two months later I tried to enter a destination into the nav and when we started off the arrow was showing us a full state away (I live in north Georgia and it was showing me in South Carolina). The map would move making it look like it recognized the movement but it was obviously showing me roads (and sometimes not on roads) in South Carolina. I just took it back in to the dealer & explained that this started happening after the airbag work was done, unfortunately by this point it had been a couple of months because I just don't use the nav that much. They had their best "weekend" tech check it out for hours & he couldn't figure it out & they want me to bring it back in this week for their master tech to check it out. Obviously they are also warning me that if they don't find something that they did then they will be charging me the diagnosis fee which I understand. My question is have any of you run into this type of thing before? The date thing I mentioned I believe is tied to this because it's my understanding that the date is saved from the GPS signal. I pulled the radio out myself to put an eye on the wiring & I didn't see anything that looked pinched or cut so I now don't think it's something along those lines. I've just read something in ALLDATA about putting the nav system into diagnostic mode so I'll be trying that when I get home.

Got my passenger bag replaced today. A few hand prints on the dash but otherwise seems to have gone smoothly.
