The 4Runner is likely to receive the new V-6 that was unveiled for the 2016 Tacoma. It could come to the sport-utility in a year or two and would improve both power and efficiency compared to today's 4.0-liter.

It's likely when the next generation is released (IMO), but the jury is still out on when that will happen. 2017-2018 seem to be the best guesses as when the 6th gen will come out.

Will not happen in 2016, as that model is already announced internally to be the same, minus a few color changes.

Does anyone think it'll be a 4.0L version of the same updates with D4S? Could be more like 300hp, 300ft lbs.

I'm guessing the 3.5 will be roughly 290hp 280ft lbs on 87 fuel. I'd also guess that it will be the only engine in the '17 4runner, but I could see Toyota adding the 2.0l turbo as a small engine option.

Then again Toyota does wierd stuff. Like the '16 Lexus IS lineup adding a RWD 4cyl with 250hp and an awd 3.0L v6 with 260ish hp and either with the 3.5L 300hp v6. Why not just do an awd turbo 4cyl? and offer 1 v6 option? Makes no sense to me. I want a turbo 4cyl version in awd if it's tunable it should be easy to outperform the 3.5L v6.
