2016 Trail - 275/75/17s are rubbing - Thought I'd be OK

Got my new wheels and tires installed on my 16 Trail. I got a setup that through most of the research I had done, indicated there would be no rubbing. Well I am getting some rubbing at full turn going forward. Not sure about reverse. Didn't have a lot of time to test this morning before work.

Questions:

• Should this setup rub in your opinon?
• Where is the most common place it actually rubs? Is there a way I can tell?
• Will a lift fix it?
• What are some other common remedies for rubbibng?

Edit: Most of the rubbing was caused by a hump on the mudflaps. Update on page 2.

You need at least a leveling kit in my opinion. I'm certain someone with way more knowledge will chime in.

You're more than likely rubbing on the front bumper and liner. Trim the bumper and push the liner forward and you should be good.

The kit with tools and templates, part # PTR25-89150 is rather pricey from Toyota, but there's no reason you couldn't do it yourself.

there should be a bit of visual indication of where it's rubbing. But some masking tape on those areas and drive around, cut the wheel, reverse, cut the wheel, etc

if there's anything well-documented on this site, it's how to make adjustments for rubbing.

there's even a proceedure outlined that they use at the port for TRD pro's which involves some bumper trimming at the fore of the front fender.

totally manageable. You're about to be a pro at trimming.

This is a great place for trimming expertise!

I speced out on discount tires site and called to order. The site said I should do the same but w/ a 9" wheel. The guy on the phone said I should do an 8" to avoid rubbing. I see you indicate the stock TEs have a greater backspace. To be honest, I am a total newb when it comes to wheels, sizing, offsets, etc. It's all gibberish to me.

Will lifting help? I've read some posts that say you can fix rubbing with it and some that say you can make it worse.

I have 275/70/17s and recently put aftermarket wheels that stuck out farther than the stock wheels so had rubbing on stock suspension. I removed the front mud flaps and that cured most of the rubbing aside from reversing and turning tightly, then it rubbed on the actual fender where it turns down under the bumper. I added a lift so my rubbing is gone now but the above solved the rub to my liking with no lift. I was just careful about backing up with a tight turn.

Good to know. Wheels are definitely the issue. Just got to find out where now. I left on my lunch break real quick - rubbed a little backing out and also definitely rubbed on my full left turn pulling into my parking spot. I got to do some testing and have someone fully turn each way so I can see exactly where it's touching (if it even will while not in motion).

Lots of great threads in this. I tried to consolidate some of the info and give credit to the folks ( [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] , [MENTION=8206]harper7[/MENTION] , [MENTION=106176]wfo9[/MENTION] ) who have put some awesome information out there at link below. There is a section in there about wheel well mods you may find useful. Unless you are rubbing the UCA I imagine this is a quick fix. Even if you are, there are options.

Thanks. Masking tape sounds like a good idea but it's a soaking wet, snowy, slushy mess right now around here and will be for the foreseeable future. Not sure when I'll be able to do this.

Not sure I fully understand what to trim after glancing through that document. I will study further. Wonder how much it costs for the templates and the rest of the kit. Do you think that would solve my issues for sure? Or are the nature of rub issues that they are different depending on the vehicle, wheel, etc? What are your thoughts on a lift correcting this.

You could put a lift on and still have rubbing-- there's nobody here that can tell you definitively. Even someone with the same wheel and tire combo.

Sigh. That's what i was afraid of. I'm going to have someone turn the wheels to lock and see if I can tell where they are hitting. Hopefully it's an easy fix. Not sure I full understand everything based on the pics in that bulletin. I'm not a super DIY guy either. I'll let you know how it goes though! Thanks again!

My KDSS Trail with the TRD PRO rims rubs in front when I'm near full lock in reverse. The leveling kit I had installed to the front did not help with the rubbing.

The templates provide for a good fit between the fender liner and the front bumper cover for a factory finish. My local dealer wanted over $300 for the kit, but it's available online for $175. A local dealer would, I assume, need the kit if a Pro was damaged in the front and the valance needed replacement.

Yeah I called my local dealer and they wanted $195. I think I am going to attempt my own version from the thread I posted a couple posts above this. Looks easy enough. I am going to grab some of those snips the TSB mentions to make the cut and a sanding block on the way home. Glad it's 10 degrees out today. My garage may be about 20 degrees warmer than that If I am lucky.

I am not familiar with those snips. Why does the TSB say to use the modified painted version of the snips and say to use the painted side against paint on the bumper? Are one sides of the jaws different or is that painted side some form of protection against the paint on the bumper?
