2018 with gunmental glove box trim spider-cracking?

Hamer in Mission Hills, CA. But I live in Valencia so I'd likely get my warranty work done there... if I had them fixed it. Not inclined to, since it sounds like it's a fundamental part issue.

I don't think it's sun related at all. I bought my car 4 months ago, with 1 mile on the clock. That puts it in mid-Feb, and I believe the Japan build date was late December. So the thing basically came right off the assembly line, hit a boat, and landed in the covered parking area of Hamer.

I'd like to know if plastidip or wrap would be applicable, without removing the whole part from the car. Any thoughts?

I had the same issue in my 2014 and had it replaced under warranty. The replacement now looks the same as the one they replaced same crackling finish. I wasnt sure if the original finish was due to a cleaner or protector that I may have used so for the second one I made sure not to clean it with anything other than water and a microfiber towel. Having it replaced wont fix the issue, at least not in my case. It is disappointing how cheap some of the interior stuff is (lasting only a year or 2 before becoming defective).

Wonder if replacing with the SR5 piano-black version or the Limited wood-version might help. But still think I'll try the plastidip. Sigh.

Which socal dealer did you get this done?

Tustin Toyota. Took me a few trips but they finally replaced it. They told me to only clean it with a dry microfiber towel. If grime,dirt, etc. is found on it, use a damp microfiber towel to clean and then dry it. The technicians believe the cracking could be due to chemical cleaners. Not sure about the truth behind that.

Ive been the only owner on my T4R. I dont use harsh chemicals or wipes or anything on the dash. Towel or damp microfiber towel does all my interior work.

It seems like a manf'n issue. As its only visible from the side in the right light.

I was pretty disenchanted with the faux wood in my Limited. The only place the faux wood was located was shift knob and the passenger dash trim. I did not like it from the min I saw it. So, I covered it with black ash wood grain vinyl. I also replaced the shift knob with the TRD variety. Much happier now.

Just looked at my 2016 and it has the spider cracks.
I didn't notice it before but since that piece matches nothing in the whole truck I'm going to cover it with something.
Besides, on a sunny day the reflection is so bad on the passenger window I cannot see anything in the side mirror.

Sure but it won't look as good. I'd have to check the service manual, I would say that piece is pretty easy to pull, you'd more that likely have two 10mm bolts at the bottom below the glove box, maybe two or three others tucked inside, and a trim tool set to pull the ends and the actual piece you are working on.

It is all the same underneath for all 5th gens so just reverse his final procedure.

In order to wrap the part properly, you need to remove the center section. It really is not that hard at all. To ensure the wrap lasts, wrapping around the edges and folding over the sides and ends is a must. The link for the vinyl is below. The 24" x 49" is the smallest piece that will work as the grain runs the width not the length. I needed the extra length as I was successful after 3 attempts.

Update, guys:

I just pulled the glove box and took apart the trim and plastidipped the brushed-look bar piece there.

It looks awesome, and reduces glare, too. The wife said she'd think it came that way if I hadn't pointed it out.

The trick is to be careful taking the dash apart, and evenly applying the plastidip per the instructions. I used 4 coats, 30 mins apart followed by a 4 hour cure time.

Thanks! Should be durable, fixable if scratched, and better than looking at the scratching/etching. Can't believe the stock piece got so bad in 3 months, mostly indoor parking.
