I have been using this spot and placement in all my cars. Perfectly easy to reach, see and does not block my vision.

I use the CarHomeUlta app which simplify's all my car apps by putting them on a custom home screen and has some automation. I still hate car play and most infotainment systems alone so this is a superior solution.

Thanks to everyone’s great ideas in this thread, just installed mine this afternoon. Went with the often used ram mount installation (using trail4r’s instructions) but attached the Quicklock motorcycle mount with it. Night photo, so not a great shot...

Wanted the ram mount location, but one handed functionality.

Use quad lock already for bicycles - love ur idea. Would you mind sharing details? Which motorcycle mount is that how did you attach it.

I used the ram mount instructions from here: 5th Gen 4Runner iPhone/ Droid Phone Mount - 4Runner Phone Mount

Bought a 1/4” hex bolt and washer from my local hardware store then these online:

RAM Ball Adapter with 1/4"-20 Threaded Hole: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006RKF1X8/

RAM Mounts RAM DBL SOCKET ARM A-LENGTH Body Other Bases BLK- RAM-B-201U-A: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002L9LW00/

Quadlock Motorcycle 1” Ball Adapter: Motorcycle - 1" Ball Adaptor – Quad Lock(R) USA

So washer and hex bolt go through the dash from the inside, connect ram ball adapter to that on the outside, connect ram double socket arm to that, then quadlock to the other side of the double socket.

As far as drilling the hole and lining it all up, I basically just shoved the whole mount when put together as far back into the dash area as it could go, then scooched it up and out a bit so there was clearance around ram ball adapter and marked it with a sharpie on the painters tape. Pulled the dash out, used that to place the mount setup back on the marking and finish marking out exactly where it would go. Drilled a pilot hole at the center of my marking then finished with a 1/4” bit.

I've been searching for months for a viable solution until I can find a way to get CarPlay for a reasonable price (i.e. not spend $4k on the 2020 Head Unit or $1800 on the Alpine Halo). After trying a variety of suction and adhesive bases attached to magnets, gravity, etc. I have narrowed it down to two plug and play solutions - I plan on trying both of these to see what I like better.

1. ProClip Vent Mount attached to 67Designs Phone Holder and micro CF arm. 67Designs makes a custom attachment that attaches to the ProClip. Not as clean as the solution Taco Owners get with their rail system.

2. Completely different direction, but achieves the same purpose for me. Hudway Drive HUD system. It connects via bluetooth to your phone and to put it simply, it's CarPlay in a HUD display. I'm pre-ordering this today, will report with a review when I have it in hands.

I just did the snailtrail female threaded ball mount. It was super easy even with the drilling.
edit-i apologize for the wrong sided pics.

I did this with my new t9 radio. Same stuff. Except I used two washers one inside and out to protect the finish from getting scratched when tightening it.

Any updates after using this for a while? I need something for my phone but can't decide what it is.

Very happy with it, it actually holds the phone so well you have to remove the phone at a slight angle. Been off road no issues, it’s nice having the phone where it’s easy to see.

Does anyone have a good CarPlay mount? What I want is a mount with a fixed cord so that I can just slide the phone in and have CarPlay take over without fumbling for the cord. I don’t need the phone to be visible so any mounting locations are fine.

So far this is what I've gone with on mine. This is a RAM mount screwed into the little coin pocket. It's a bit tight between all the shifters and radio mount, but does work well.
